Memorial Medical Center to Sponsor Workshop for Cancer Survivors, Family

[June 01, 2018]   SPRINGFIELD - Memorial Medical Center will hold an inspirational workshop for cancer survivors and their families Saturday, June 2, in the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI).

The program, “Hope Grows Here: A Cancer Survivors' Event,” will begin at 2 p.m. in the Curtis Theatre Classroom on the MCLI's second floor.

The two-hour program will feature Jennifer Fishburn, horticulture educator from the University of Illinois Extension, who will share her expertise on planting flowers and tips for helping them thrive.

Fishburn's talk will be followed by a craft time, where participants can plant flowers, paint rocks and make origami butterflies.

Naomi Wands, a registered nurse and the community cancer education coordinator at Memorial Medical Center, and Heather Niemerg, director of oncology services at Memorial Medical Center, will lead an inspirational talk, which will include poetry and writings on hope.

After their talk, a painting by artist Rick Kehl of Mason City will be revealed, and cancer survivors will be recognized.

The event will conclude with a blessing from the Pastoral Care department and a butterfly release near the main entrance of the hospital.
