Jedd Gyorko's RBI single in the
top of the 10th inning Friday night lifted the St. Louis Cardinals
to a 7-6 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park in
Cincinnati.
Marcell Ozuna started the winning rally with a one-out walk against
Raisel Iglesias (1-1). Yadier Molina slapped a hit-and-run single to
right that pushed Ozuna to third, and Gyorko slashed a 1-2 pitch
into left to plate Ozuna.
The result was St. Louis' eighth straight win over the Reds this
year and its 12th in a row over them, dating back to last September.
Cincinnati forced extra innings with a two-run rally in the bottom
of the ninth after a 36-minute rain delay, handing Bud Norris his
second blown save in 14 chances. Joey Votto's RBI single scored
Scott Schebler, and Jesse Winker's two-out single plated pinch
runner Brandon Dixon with the equalizer.
Norris (3-1) ended up getting the win, with John Brebbia working the
10th for his second save. Brebbia whiffed Dixon with two on to
secure the outcome.
St. Louis' Jose Martinez initiated the scoring in the top of the
first inning, lofting a 347-foot homer just over the right field
wall. Yairo Munoz made it 2-0 in the second when he cracked his
third homer.
Cincinnati got on the board in its half of the second when Jose
Peraza beat out a double-play ball, scoring Eugenio Suarez.
But Martinez put the Reds in the problem in the third, pounding a
417-foot shot to center, his eighth homer of the year and third in
two games. It marked the third two-homer game of his career.

Cincinnati pecked away against starter Luke Weaver in the middle
innings.
The Reds scored in the third when Scooter Gennett drilled a two-out
RBI double to the wall in left-center, then cut the margin to 5-3 in
the fifth as Winker worked a bases-loaded walk.
Votto's two-out RBI single made it 5-4 in the sixth, but Matt
Carpenter's run-scoring single in the seventh plated Kolten Wong to
up the margin to 6-4.
Weaver permitted seven hits and four runs in five-plus innings,
walking five and whiffing three.
Cincinnati starter Matt Harvey lasted six innings, yielding four
hits and five runs with three walks and five strikeouts.
