Ehire Adrianza smacked his first
career grand slam, lifting the Minnesota Twins past the host Detroit
Tigers 6-4 on Tuesday night.
The bigger loss for the Tigers, was Miguel Cabrera. The veteran
first baseman left the game in the third inning with ruptured left
biceps tendon, and he will undergo season-ending surgery.
Cabrera sustained the injury on a swing and miss at a Jake Odorizzi
breaking pitch.
Adrianza's seventh-inning homer, his third of the season, gave the
Twins a three-run lead. Adrianza had three hits and scored twice.
Yankees 3, Nationals 0
Didi Gregorius homered twice, leading New York past visiting
Washington.
Gregorius recorded his fourth career multi-homer game and third this
season. He set a team record for multi-homer games by a shortstop in
a single season and homered for the first time since May 23.
CC Sabathia (4-1) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings and became the
fifth pitcher to get 1,500 strikeouts for the Yankees. He joined
Andy Pettitte, Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford and Red Ruffing.
Phillies 5, Rockies 4
Aaron Nola pitched 6 2/3 strong innings, and Scott Kingery homered
and knocked in four runs to lead Philadelphia past visiting
Colorado.
Nola (8-2) allowed just one run on four hits and no walks. He struck
out 10. Philadelphia led 5-1 through eight innings, but Colorado
scored three times in the ninth before leaving the potential tying
and go-ahead runs on base.
Rockies starter Jon Gray (6-7) gave up four runs on just three hits
in six innings. He walked four and fanned 10.
Brewers 4, Cubs 0
Chase Anderson, Taylor Williams and Jacob Barnes combined to pitch a
two-hit shutout as host Milwaukee cruised to a win over Chicago.
Travis Shaw finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and a season-high four
RBIs to lead the Brewers at the plate. Anderson (5-5) allowed one
hit and two walks while striking out six in seven innings.
Willson Contreras and Addison Russell tallied the only hits for
Chicago, which was blanked for the fifth time this year. The Cubs
lost to the Brewers for only the second time in 10 meetings this
season.
Rays 4, Blue Jays 1
Wilson Ramos hit a two-run homer to open the scoring, and Tampa Bay
went on to defeat Toronto in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Rays have won
the first two games of the three-game series.
Ryne Stanek started on the mound for the Rays, pitching two perfect
innings with three strikeouts. He was replaced by Austin Pruitt
(2-3), who allowed one run and four hits with one strikeout in 2 2/3
innings.
Sergio Romo pitched around a single in the ninth inning to earn his
second save of the season.
Marlins 3, Giants 1
Trevor Richards earned his first major league victory, leading Miami
past visiting San Francisco Giants.
Making his seventh major league start, Richards (1-3) overcame a
wild start but allowed just two hits, three walks and one run in six
innings. He struck out two. The Marlins got three scoreless innings
of relief, one each from Adam Conley, Brad Ziegler and Kyle
Barraclough, who earned his fourth save.
Miami's offensive stars were JT Riddle, who hit a go-ahead, two-run
double; and Starlin Castro, who went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Riddle
also made a stellar defensive play.
Red Sox 6, Orioles 4
Rafael Devers and Andrew Benintendi both homered as Boston won at
Baltimore.
Eduardo Rodriguez (8-1) won his career-best fifth consecutive start.
He allowed two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The Orioles lost their six game in a row and fell for the 13th time
in 15 games.
Reds 5, Royals 1 (10 innings)
Joey Votto delivered a tiebreaking, three-run triple in the top of
the 10th inning to lead Cincinnati to a victory at Kansas City.
Tucker Barnhart hit a tying homer in the ninth to keep the Reds from
being blanked. The win was just Cincinnati's third in the past nine
games.
Hunter Dozier homered and Ian Kennedy threw eight shutout innings
for the Royals, who lost for the eighth time in their past nine
games.
Padres 4, Cardinals 2
Relievers Matt Strahm and Adam Cimber retired the first 15 Cardinals
they faced in a "bullpen start," and Eric Hosmer homered to start a
three-run, fourth-inning rally, leading San Diego to a win at St.
Louis.

The Cardinals didn't have a baserunner until Harrison Bader led off
the sixth with an infield single. St. Louis then scored two runs in
the bottom of the seventh against Craig Stammen.
Strahm retired all nine hitters he faced with four strikeouts.
Cimber (3-2) worked the next three scoreless innings, allowing only
Bader's hit with three strikeouts to get credit for the win. Brad
Hand recorded his 20th save.
White Sox 5, Indians 1
James Shields earned his first win since Opening Day, and Yoan
Moncada and Yolmer Sanchez hit back-to-back homers to start the
first inning as Chicago beat visiting Cleveland.
The White Sox have alternated wins with losses over the past seven
games. The Indians lost for the second time in seven games.
Shields (2-7) allowed one run on four hits and no walks while
striking out two over seven innings. He was 0-7 with a 4.83 ERA in
13 games (12 starts) since earned the win against the Kansas City
Royals on Opening Day.
Braves 8, Mets 2
Ozzie Albies blasted a grand slam to cap a six-run outburst in the
sixth inning and lead host Atlanta to a win over New York.
It was the second grand slam in the past month for Albies, and his
16th homer of the season. The second baseman leads the National
League with 37 extra-base hits and 53 runs.
Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz threw five scoreless innings and
allowed only two hits. Reliever Shane Carle (4-1) pitched two-thirds
of an inning and was the beneficiary of the go-ahead rally.
Diamondbacks 13, Pirates 8
Jon Jay had three hits, including three-run homer, and Ketel Marte
had two hits and drove in three runs as Arizona took an 8-0 lead and
held on for a victory over Pittsburgh in Phoenix.
Paul Goldschmidt, Marte and John Ryan Murphy collected two hits
apiece for the Diamondbacks, who have scored 51 runs during a
five-game winning streak. Jay, acquired Thursday from the Royals,
was 0-for-12 in his first four games with the Diamondbacks before
Tuesday.
Starling Marte hit a three-run homer, and Josh Bell and Josh
Harrison had three hits and an RBI apiece for the Pirates.
Dodgers 12, Rangers 5
Max Muncy homered in a fourth consecutive game, and Yasiel Puig
drove in three runs as Los Angeles rolled to a victory over visiting
Texas.
The Dodgers have won 18 of their past 24 games. By winning the
opener of a two-game interleague matchup, they have assured
themselves of going unbeaten in their past eight series.
The Rangers fell to a season-high 15 games under .500 while losing
their fifth consecutive game. They have dropped eight of their past
11.
Mariners 6, Angels 3
Mitch Haniger and Ryon Healy each homered twice to match Mike Trout,
who accomplished the feat for the second consecutive game, as host
Seattle defeated Los Angeles.
Mike Leake pitched six innings of one-run ball for the Mariners, who
have won 10 of their past 12 games.
Edwin Diaz worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Trout to end the game
and post his major-league-leading 25th save of the season. Trout
leads the majors with 23 homers.
Astros 6, A's 3
Evan Gattis drove in a career-high five runs with a three-run home
run and a two-run double, propelling Houston to a victory at
Oakland.
Lance McCullers Jr. (8-3) went seven innings, allowing two runs and
five hits. He walked three and struck out five, beating the A's for
the third time this season.
Brad Peacock struck out Stephen Piscotty with the potential tying
runs aboard to end the eighth inning, protecting a lead that turned
into the Astros' sixth straight win. Ken Giles pitched the ninth
inning for his 11th save.
