Major League Baseball roundup: Giants beat Marlins in 16th inning

[June 15, 2018] Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run single in the top of the 16th inning as the visiting San Francisco Giants outlasted the Miami Marlins 6-3 on Thursday afternoon.

Gorkys Hernandez added a sacrifice fly as part of a three-run 16th inning, helping the Giants avoid a four-game series sweep.

Ty Blach (4-5) earned the win by pitching 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Former Marlins pitcher Sam Dyson got the last out -- with two runners on base -- to earn his first save of the season.

Miami forced extra innings when Lewis Brinson hit a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Astros 7, A's 3

Justin Verlander won his fifth consecutive decision, and Brian McCann highlighted a 13-hit attack with a two-run home run, helping Houston finish off a dominant three-game sweep at Oakland.

Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Josh Reddick, Marwin Gonzalez and Tony Kemp each had two hits for the Astros, who outscored the A's 26-11 over the three games to run their record to 8-1 against Oakland this season.

Khris Davis and Matt Olson homered for the A's in the loss.

Phillies 9, Rockies 3

Vince Velasquez took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a victory as Philadelphia beat visiting Colorado.

Velasquez got the first two outs of the seventh before walking Carlos Gonzalez. Trevor Story followed with a double on a 2-2 pitch to drive in Gonzalez and break up the no-hit bid.

Velasquez (5-7) wound up allowing two runs on one hit and two walks with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Nick Williams and Rhys Hoskins homered for Philadelphia.

Red Sox 2, Mariners 1

David Price pitched seven strong innings, and Xander Bogaerts hit a tiebreaking home run as Boston snapped Seattle's seven-game home winning streak.

Bogaerts' solo shot, to center field with two outs in the sixth inning off Felix Hernandez, helped the Red Sox earn their fourth consecutive victory.

Price (8-4) allowed one run on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Hernandez (6-6) gave up two runs on eight hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Boston closer Craig Kimbrel escaped a two-on, no-outs jam in the ninth inning for his 22nd save.

Indians 5, White Sox 2

Mike Clevinger struck out a career-high 11 over seven strong innings, and Jose Ramirez hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning as Cleveland won at Chicago.

The Indians took the opener and the finale of the four-game series and have won six of their last nine overall. The White Sox have won or split their past four series.

Clevinger (5-2) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk. The 11 strikeouts bettered by one his previous single-game high, which he set against the New York Yankees on May 6.

Tigers 3, Twins 1

Michael Fulmer outdueled Lance Lynn, and JaCoby Jones hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning as host Detroit edged Minnesota.

Fulmer (3-5) held the Twins to one run on five hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out four. Shane Greene recorded his 17th save and second in as many games as the Tigers took two of three in the series.

Lynn (4-5) allowed three runs and struck out nine in 6 2/3 innings.

Yankees 4, Rays 3

Gleyber Torres hit a go-ahead, three-run homer with two outs in the fifth inning as host New York recorded a victory over Tampa Bay.

Torres hit his 13th homer when he drove a full-count, 96 mph fastball from Blake Snell (8-4) into the left field seats.

Yankees starter Domingo German (1-4) set a career high with 10 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and notched his first career victory. Aroldis Chapman pitched a perfect ninth and recorded his 19th save.

Braves 4, Padres 2

Anibal Sanchez threw seven scoreless innings, and Ender Inciarte drove in two runs as Atlanta defeated visiting San Diego.

Sanchez (3-0) scattered four hits, struck out six and didn't issue a walk in picking up his first career victory against San Diego. The veteran has allowed just two earned runs over his past three starts, a stretch of 19 1/3 innings.

Inciarte was 2-for-3 with two runs. He hit his fifth homer, a solo shot in the fifth inning. Atlanta closer Arodys Vizcaino picked up his 13th save.

Diamondbacks 6, Mets 3

David Peralta hit two homers, and Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb also went deep as Arizona topped New York in Phoenix.

Peralta and Lamb belted solo shots in the eighth inning to put the finishing touches on Matt Koch's third consecutive victory. Koch (5-3) fired six innings of two-run ball as the Diamondbacks won for sixth time in seven games.

Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto and Amed Rosario homered for the Mets, who have lost 11 of 12 and 18 of 22.
