Warnings had already been issued
to both teams before Straily plunked San Francisco catcher Buster
Posey with a pitch in the second inning. Straily and Marlins manager
Don Mattingly were immediately ejected.
Mattingly was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed
amount, MLB announced.
Straily's suspension will begin Friday against the Colorado Rockies
unless he appeals, which he will, according the Miami Herald's Clark
Spencer.
--The Baltimore Orioles activated outfielder Colby Rasmus from the
60-day disabled list, and he homered in the first at-bat of his
return against Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer.
Baltimore also optioned outfielder Joey Rickard to Triple-A Norfolk
and transferred left-hander Richard Bleier to the 60-day DL. Bleier
underwent season-ending lat surgery on Tuesday.
Rasmus spent the past 2 1/2 months on the DL with a left hip flexor
strain. He batted .095 (2-for-21) with 13 strikeouts in eight games
prior to the injury. The 31-year-old batted .275 with two homers and
10 RBIs in 15 rehab games split between high Class-A Frederick and
Double-A Bowie.
--Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Shelby Miller is slotted to make
his return to the rotation on Monday after missing over a year
rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery.
Miller, 27, rejoined his D-backs teammates before Arizona's game
against the Pirates, although he is not planned to be officially
activated from the 60-day disabled list until after the team's
weekend series at Pittsburgh. After four starts in a rehab stint at
high Class-A Visalia and Double-A Jackson, Miller is slated to face
the Miami Marlins in his season debut and first major league start
since April 23, 2017.
The six-year veteran went 2-2 with a 4.09 ERA in four starts last
season before sustaining a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament
in his pitching elbow. Miller underwent season-ending surgery on May
10.
--Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout will be limited to designated
hitter duty for at least a few days after spraining his right index
finger, the team announced.
Trout is able to swing the bat and was in the starting lineup
Thursday after being examined by team trainers. The contest will be
his 1,000th as a major-leaguer. Trout leads the majors with 23
homers and is batting .335 with 48 RBIs.
Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs is dealing with right hamstring
tightness, and he was scratched from his scheduled Thursday start
against the Toronto Blue Jays. It wasn't yet clear if Skaggs would
be able to make his next start or if he would be placed on the
10-day disabled list. The southpaw will be evaluated Friday.
--The San Francisco Giants reinstated shortstop Brandon Crawford
from the paternity list.
To make room for Crawford, infielder Kelby Tomlinson was optioned to
Triple-A Sacramento following Wednesday's game.
Crawford, who is in his eighth season with the Giants, is a career
.256 hitter but is batting a team-best .315 this season. He
announced Monday night that his wife, Jalynne, gave birth to the
couple's fourth child, a boy named Bryson.
--The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Michael Wacha on the
10-day disabled list due to a left oblique strain.
The DL stint for Wacha was expected after he left his Wednesday
start against the Philadelphia Phillies as a result of the injury.
Wacha winced after throwing ball four to Philadelphia's Rhys Hoskins
with two outs in the fourth inning. He was set to undergo an MRI on
Thursday in Milwaukee, where the Cardinals began a four-game set
against the Brewers. On the season, Wacha is 8-2 with a 3.20 ERA in
15 starts.
Right-hander John Gant was recalled from Triple-A Memphis in a
corresponding move. Gant returns to the Cardinals for his third
stint this season. The 25-year-old is 1-2 with a 4.74 ERA in seven
games (three starts).
--The San Diego Padres was expected to activate right fielder Wil
Myers on Thursday night after a nearly two-month stint on the 10-day
disabled list. The team was to option outfielder Franmil Reyes to
Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.
Myers had been out since April 29 with a strained left oblique. That
was his second trip to the disabled list this season; Myers
previously missed time because of nerve irritation in his right arm
and back soreness.
Myers, 27, has hit .300 with one home run and three RBIs in 10 games
this season. He was an All-Star in 2016, when he hit .259 with 28
home runs and 94 RBIs for San Diego. He followed that up with his
first 30-homer campaign in 2017.
--The New York Yankees placed right-hander A.J. Cole on the 10-day
disabled list due to a left neck strain.
The move, retroactive to Wednesday, created a roster spot for
reliever Luis Cessa, who was returned from his rehab assignment and
reinstated from the DL. Cessa had been out due to a left oblique
strain.
Acquired from the Nationals in April, Cole has been lights out in
the Yankees' bullpen, posting an 0.69 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 13
innings over seven appearances.
--Major League Baseball announced the Kansas City Royals and Detroit
Tigers will play a regular-season game in Omaha, Neb., the week the
2019 College World Series begins.
The contest is scheduled for June 13, 2019, as reported earlier this
week. The game reportedly will be the third of a three-game series
between the teams. Games 1 and 2 will be played in Kansas City.
The event will mark the first major league game ever played in
Nebraska and will take place at TD Ameritrade Park, host site of the
CWS. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
