Preston, who went undrafted Thursday, was a top
recruit and McDonald's All-American in 2017. He never took the
court for the Jayhawks, though, as an on-campus car accident in
November triggered an NCAA investigation into whether his
eligibility was compromised over the car's financing.
Kansas head coach Bill Self announced Preston would sit until
the investigation was completed. Self sounded optimistic in
December that Preston would be cleared, but no action came from
the NCAA.
As a result, Preston agreed to a contract with a professional
basketball team in Bosnia in January. Preston played three games
with the team, BC Igokea, before returning home because of an
injury.
Preston reportedly took part in private workouts with multiple
teams leading up to the draft, but his lack of playing time in
the past year damaged his stock.
Preston, a 6-foot-10 power forward, was the No. 20 player in the
Class of 2017, according to ESPN rankings. Rivals.com ranked
Preston eighth in the Class of 2017 out of renowned basketball
program Oak Hill Academy in in Mouth of Wilson, Va.
