NHL roundup: Rangers end skid with OT win

[March 01, 2018] John Gilmour's overtime goal gave the Rangers a 6-5 win over the host Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night as New York ended its losing streak at seven games.

The Rangers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 12 1/2 minutes, but the Canucks responded with three unanswered goals and later overcame 4-3 and 5-4 deficits.

Kevin Hayes led the new-look Rangers with two goals, while Vladislav Namestnikov, recently acquired in a trade, recorded a goal and an assist. Jimmy Vesey and Mika Zibanejad also scored for the visitors.

Brock Boeser led the Canucks with two goals, while Daniel Sedin, Bo Horvat and Nikolay Goldobin also tallied for Vancouver. Horvat had two assists and Daniel Sedin had one. Brendan Leipsic, acquired Monday in a trade, contributed two assists.

Sabres 2, Lightning 1

Jason Pominville scored a power-play goal 1:26 into overtime to lead visiting Buffalo to a win over Tampa Bay.

Cory Conacher scored a first-period goal for the Lightning. Evan Rodrigues tied the game at 11:47 of the third period off an assist from Pominville.

Buffalo's Chad Johnson recorded 21 saves. Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy had 32 stops.

Avalanche 5, Flames 2

Nathan MacKinnon and Tyson Barrie each scored a goal and added an assist during a four-goal second period that lifted Colorado to a win over Calgary in Denver.

Nikita Zadorov, Matt Nieto and Duncan Siemens also lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who are tied with the Flames at 73 points. Both are one point out of the final playoff spot in the conference.

Mikael Backlund and Michael Frolik tallied goals for the Flames.

Blues 2, Red Wings 1

Scottie Upshall and Alex Pietrangelo scored, and St. Louis snapped a seven-game winless streak by holding off visiting Detroit.

Carter Hutton recorded 35 saves as the Blues won for the first time since defeating the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 9.

Andreas Athanasiou scored the lone goal for Detroit, cutting a two-goal deficit in half in the final minutes of the game. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the Red Wings, who had won their previous two games.

Canadiens 3, Islanders 1

Jonathan Drouin scored once and added an assist, and goalie Antti Niemi made 27 saves as Montreal produced three unanswered goals to beat visiting New York.

Drouin, who has had a middling season in Montreal after being acquired last summer from the Lightning, broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal at the 8:29 mark of the second period. Paul Byron and Nikita Scherbak also scored for the Canadiens.

Mathew Barzal netted a goal for the Islanders, who got 23 saves from Jaroslav Halak.
