Right-hander Max Scherzer struck out five in three perfect
innings as the Washington Nationals posted a 2-1 victory over a New
York Mets split squad on Friday at Port St. Lucie, Fla., in a game
that featured Tim Tebow's first hit of the spring.
The three-time Cy Young Award winner struck out Tebow on three
pitches during a 49-second at-bat in the second inning. However,
Tebow singled to center in the fourth off Nationals right-hander
Erick Fedde.
"He's nasty. He's really good," Tebow told reporters afterward of
Scherzer. "That's awesome to be able to see one of the best in the
league, one of the best doing it a long time. It's great work for
me."
Howie Kendrick had a run-scoring double and Victor Robles homered
for the Washington runs. Gavin Cecchini homered for the Mets.

Miguel Cabrera delivered the tiebreaking two-run double in the
second inning and Detroit cruised past Miami at Lakeland, Fla. Brian
Anderson homered for the Marlins.
Twins 2, Blue Jays 1
Right-hander Jake Odorizzi struck out three during 2 2/3 hitless
innings and Eddie Rosario homered to help Minnesota edge Toronto at
Fort Myers, Fla. Max Pentecost had a run-scoring double for the Blue
Jays.
Dodgers 7, White Sox 6
Left-hander Clayton Kershaw gave up one hit in two scoreless innings
and Jake Peter hit a three-run homer as Los Angeles edged Chicago at
Glendale, Ariz. Adam Engel and Eddy Alvarez homered for the White
Sox.
Indians 9, Rangers 4
Jason Kipnis hit a three-run homer and Roberto Perez and Abraham
Almonte added solo blasts as Cleveland defeated Texas at Goodyear,
Ariz. Joey Gallo homered for the Rangers.
Orioles 10, Pirates 8
Manny Machado went 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs and Tim
Beckham homered and had three RBIs as Baltimore outlasted Pittsburgh
at Sarasota, Fla. Adam Frazier went 3-for-3 with a three-run triple
for the Pirates.
Reds 3, Giants 2
Phillip Ervin delivered the go-ahead single in the top of the ninth
inning as Cincinnati edged San Francisco at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Left-hander Madison Bumgarner struck out four in three perfect
innings for the Giants, who received homers from Kyle Jensen and
Steven Duggar.
Padres 13, Royals 5
Austin Hedges and Christian Villanueva homered and Eric Hosmer went
1-for-4 with an RBI against his former team as San Diego routed
Kansas City at Peoria, Ariz. Jorge Bonifacio hit a three-run blast
and Salvador Perez added a two-run shot for the Royals.

Phillies 9, Rays 2
Scott Kingery and Jesmuel Valentin homered to help Philadelphia roll
past Tampa Bay at Port Charlotte, Fla. Joey Wendle had two of the
Rays' five hits.
Yankees 5, Braves 4
Tyler Austin hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the
ninth inning to lift New York over Atlanta at Tampa, Fla. Ronald
Acuna Jr. hit a two-run homer to stake the Braves to a 4-0 lead in a
contest in which Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson struck
out as a pinch hitter for the Yankees.
Mariners 4, Brewers 2
Daniel Vogelbach hit a go-ahead three-run homer to help Seattle
slide past Milwaukee at Phoenix. The Brewers scored runs on Nate
Orf's bases-loaded walk and Mauricio Dubon's sacrifice fly.
Rockies 15, Diamondbacks 6
Chris Iannetta homered twice and had five RBIs and David Dahl had a
homer and three RBIs as Colorado sailed past Arizona at Scottsdale,
Ariz. Jake Lamb hit a grand slam and Michael Perez added a solo
blast for the D-backs.
Red Sox 9, Cardinals 6
Sam Travis had two homers and four RBIs and Andrew Benintendi also
went deep as Boston slipped by St. Louis at Jupiter, Fla. Both teams
saw their starting pitchers leave with injuries -- Cardinals
right-hander Bud Norris (hamstring) departed in third inning, and
Red Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz (forearm tightness) left while
facing his first hitter of the second inning.
Cubs 6, Angels 4
Ryan Court hit a two-run double in the top of the ninth to help
Chicago knock off Los Angeles at Tempe, Ariz. Jefry Marte went
2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Angels.
Mets (ss) 7, Astros 7
Houston's Jack Mayfield hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of
the ninth, and both teams elected to forgo extra innings at West
Palm Beach, Fla. Mayfield finished 3-for-4 and Luis Guillorme drove
in three runs for New York.
