MLB notebook: QB Wilson K's for Yankees

[March 03, 2018] Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson struck out swinging as a pinch hitter in his spring training game debut with the New York Yankees on Friday.

Wilson entered the game at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., in the fifth inning to face Atlanta Braves left-handed reliever Max Fried.

Wilson worked a 2-2 count before striking out on a fastball.

The 29-year-old Wilson, who joined the Yankees at camp on Monday, has been taking batting practice and fielding ground balls from second base this week. The Yankees, who acquired the rights to Wilson from the Texas Rangers in exchange for future considerations in a Feb. 7 trade, previously said he wouldn't play in a spring training game.

--The Yankees signed first baseman/outfielder Adam Lind to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Lind, 34, hit .303 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs in 116 games with the Washington Nationals last season. The left-handed batter made 30 starts at first base, 25 in left field and six as the designated hitter.

In 48 plate appearances as a pinch hitter in 2017, Lind hit .356 (16-for-45) and tied for the major league lead with four pinch-hit home runs.

--Detroit Tigers left-hander Travis Wood is out for the season with a torn ACL and medial meniscus in his left knee.

Wood was injured Thursday in a spring training game against the Atlanta Braves. The 31-year-old was making his spring debut after being sidelined by an injury to his right index finger.

Wood went 4-7 with a 6.80 ERA in 39 games (14 starts) last season when he split time with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres. He joined the Tigers on a minor league deal in the offseason.

--The Cincinnati Reds claimed left-handed relief pitcher Jairo Labourt off waivers from the Tigers.

Labourt, who turns 24 next Wednesday, had been designated for assignment earlier in the week as the Tigers made room for veteran southpaw Francisco Liriano.

Labourt made his major league debut last season with Detroit, where he pitched in six games and allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. To make room for Labourt, the Reds transferred right-hander Rookie Davis (hip) to the 60-day disabled list.

--The Baltimore Orioles agreed to terms with veteran free agent Danny Valencia on a minor league contract, according to multiple reports.

The agreement, first reported by MLB.com, is pending a physical scheduled for Saturday.

USA Today reported that the deal includes a base salary of $1.2 million with another $3 million in potential incentives. Valencia, 33, hit .256 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 130 games with the Seattle Mariners last season. He played the majority of his games at first base after breaking into the major leagues as a third baseman.
