The Lincoln College Softball team is in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
this week to begin the 2018 season. On Monday, the team collected
two wins by defeating Grand Rapids CC (MI) 9-8 and Henry Ford CC
(MI) 15-8.
Game one against Grand Rapids ended in dramatic fashion, thanks to a
walk-off single by sophomore Kalliegh Rogers (Lincoln). Going into
the bottom of the seventh inning, the game was tied 8-8. Sophomore
Ali Peden (South Fork) led off the inning with a sharp single to
centerfield then was moved to third on a single by fellow sophomore
Skylar Dougherty (Chatham). Dougherty took second on an error in the
outfield. Rogers then stepped to the plate and, on a 0-1 count,
delivered a hit between short and third to bring in Peden with the
winning run.
LC sophomore pitcher Cassidy Sanneman (Henry) picked up the win.
Sanneman gave up 11 hits over seven innings, striking out five.
In all, the Lady Lynx collected a total of ten hits in the game with
freshman Kristin Arvanis (Silvis), sophomore Abbi Beulow (Rockford)
and Rogers tallying two hits apiece.
In the second game of the day, LC faced Henry Ford Community College
Both pitching staffs had their hands full in this high-scoring

HFCC got on the board early by scoring one run in the first inning.
However, the Lady Lynx would respond with six runs in the third
inning to take the lead for good. In that inning, sophomore Kiya
Harper (Decatur) came through with the key hit when she doubled on a
3-1 count, scoring two runs.
Lincoln also scored six runs in the fifth inning thanks to some
sloppy play by their opponents. LC hitters induced four walks and
took advantage of an error on a ball put in play by Abbi Beulow.
Kiya Harper earned the win for the Lady Lynx. She allowed five hits
and eight runs over seven innings, striking out ten.
Lincoln College Coach Tara Morris was pleased with the start her
team is off to. “I saw plenty of positive things today that we can
build on this year,” said Morris. “Defensively, we looked
comfortable in our positions, and the pitchers looked strong on the
mound with plenty of movement on the ball,” she added.
LC (2-0) will continue play today with a 3:00 PM game against Penn
State University-Greater Allegheny and a 5:00 PM match-up against
Lackawana College (PA).
