The Lincoln College Men’s Volleyball team split a pair of best
two-out-of-three matches at home on Thursday evening against the
visiting Trinity Christian College Trolls (NAIA).
The LC B squad faced the TCC JV in the opening match and was able to
win in two sets (25-21, 25-22). Lincoln used a balanced attack and
strong blocking at the net to maintain leads throughout most of both
sets. Freshman setters Miguel Reyes (Puerto Rico) and Luey Marquez
(Orlando) spread out their combined 20 set assists between six
different hitters in the match. Freshman outside hitter Jonathan
Vargas (Puerto Rico) led the team with seven kills and he recorded
five digs.
Junior outside hitter Kyle Murphy (Itasca) made his return to the
lineup after missing several weeks due to a hand injury. Murphy was
good for four kills and two service points in his first action since
January.
Sophomore middle hitter Kenny Koster (Chicago) was the team leader
in blocks with four.
Libero Trenton Kielion (Princeville) had eight digs in the match. He
also provided several on-target passes in serve receive during the
final stretch of game two where, with Lincoln clinging to a slim
17-16 lead, the team was able to side out seven times in a row
without giving up a point in serve receive. Kielion then delivered
on LC’s first match point opportunity to score his third point of
the night and seal the win.
In the second match of the evening, the LC A team took on the
Trinity Varsity. Things looked good for the Lynx in the early going
as they were able to build and maintain a lead all the way up to a
22-18 advantage. However, at that point Trinity’s blockers shut down
Lincoln’s attack and ignited an 8-1 run to hand LC a 25-23 set one
loss.

Set two saw the two teams battle for control the whole way. The Lynx
and Trolls traded one-to-two point leads all the way up to a 22-22
tie score. Lincoln was unable to grab the momentum on the ensuing
volley and let Trinity score two quick points to go up 24-22. LC was
able to side out on a kill from sophomore right side hitter Charles
Carter (Blue Island), but could not stop Trinity on the next volley
and had to settle for another 25-23 loss which ended the match.
Freshman right side hitter Ramon Matos (Chicago) led his team in
kills with six and had two blocks. Charles Carter and Junior Corey
Poindexter each had five kills for LC. Libero Joudiel Poveymirow
(Puerto Rico) led in digs with 18 and sophomore Greg Scott (North
Chicago) recorded a team-high ten set assists.
LC will host Goshen College on Saturday for two matches beginning at
1:00 pm.
