Obituary
Rev. Tyrone C. Henderson, retired
Baptist pastor, passed away on March 11, 2018, at
New Perspective Senior Living, Silvis.
Services are 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Elim Covenant
Church, Moline. Cremation will take place prior to
services with a graveside service at 11:30 a.m.
Friday at Greenwood Cemetery, Canton, Illinois.
Memorials may be made to Salvation Army of Canton,
Parkside First Baptist of Burlington, or Elim
Covenant Church, Moline. Trimble Funeral Home &
Crematory, Moline, is entrusted with arrangements
Tyrone was born the youngest son of a share cropper
on Nov. 26, 1939, to Virgil and Edith (Spahn)
Henderson. His first experience with God was in a
Salvation Army service when he was just 4. He
graduated from Elmwood High School. Tyrone married
Barbara Yarger and farmed with his father for a
short time, then worked for Keystone Steel & Wire in
Peoria for 13 years. Tyrone and Barbara had three
children together. Feeling called to the ministry,
he moved his young family to Elgin, Illinois, where
he graduated from Judson College. Though his
marriage then ended, he continued on to Central
Baptist Seminary, where he earned a Master of
Divinity degree.
He married Kathy Carman on December 29, 1974. Called
to serve as the pastor of the First Baptist Church
of Corydon, Iowa, he ministered there for 6 years
and his three younger children were born there. He
then served as senior pastor of the Centralia,
Illinois, First Baptist Church. While living in
Centralia, he also worked as a substance abuse
counselor for the local hospital. Tyrone then served
the First Baptist in Oskaloosa, Iowa for 4 1/2
years.
In the fall of 1994 he became the
pastor for what is now called Parkside First Baptist
in Burlington, Iowa, and served there over 11 years.
In Burlington he also worked as a hospital and
nursing home chaplain for many years. He was also
involved on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the
Take Away Hunger board, the Council of Churches, and
was a founding member of the Burlington Police
Chaplain Corp. |
As his health failed, Kathy made the decision
to move closer to their daughter Dora Beth in the Quad
Cities. In his last months, he received the blessing of
compassionate care from Bickford of Burlington and New
Perspectives in Silvis. He also appreciated special visits
and conversations with each of his six children.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his six children, Ty
Henderson Jr, Cheryl Chandler, Marcy Eliakis, Dora Beth
Christy, Tricia Henderson, and David Henderson; and numerous
grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; his first
wife, Barbara; and siblings, Clifford, Marcella, Carole,
Gerald, and Charmaine.
