Spring roundup: Betts goes deep twice as Red Sox top Twins

[March 26, 2018]  Mookie Betts homered twice and drove in three runs and Andrew Benintendi also went deep as the Boston Red Sox recorded a 6-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday at Fort Myers, Fla.

Betts homered to left field to lead off the contest and later delivered a two-run blast in the fourth to give Boston a 5-1 lead. Benintendi homered later in the inning.

Red Sox left-hander David Price (3-0) struck out four and walked two in three innings. He gave up one run and one hit. Brian Dozier homered off Price in the first inning for Minnesota's run.

Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings in his final spring tune-up, and Matt Adams, Michael A. Taylor and Chris Dominguez all homered as Washington defeated St. Louis at West Palm Beach, Fla. Marcell Ozuna had an RBI double off Strasburg, who allowed two runs and three hits.

Mets 4, Marlins (ss) 3

Yoenis Cespedes and Jay Bruce slammed back-to-back homers in the fifth inning as New York edged Miami at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Riley Mahan homered for Miami.

Tigers 10, Braves 3

Michael Fulmer allowed two hits over seven shutout innings, and Miguel Cabrera and Jose Iglesias homered as Detroit routed Atlanta at Lakeland, Fla. Danny Santana had a run-scoring triple for the Braves.

Orioles 6, Phillies 5

Jaycob Brugman had a run-scoring single and an RBI double to help Baltimore defeat Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Rhys Hoskins and Maikel Franco homered for the Phillies.

Astros 6, Marlins (ss) 2

Carlos Correa, Marwin Gonzalez and Brian McCann all homered as Houston knocked off Miami at Jupiter, Fla. Monte Harrison homered for the Marlins.

Rays 11, Yankees 1

Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer and Adeiny Hechavarria and Daniel Robertson hit two-run blasts as Tampa Bay socked six homers while rolling past New York at Port Charlotte, Fla. Tristan Gray, Josh Lowe and Jermaine Palacios added solo shots for the Rays, while Trey Amburgey had a run-scoring single for the Yankees.

Francisco Cervelli homered and had three RBIs, and Jose Osuna hit a two-run blast as Pittsburgh defeated Toronto at Dunedin, Fla. Steve Pearce homered for the Blue Jays.

White Sox 16, Brewers 1

Eddy Alvarez homered and knocked in four runs as Chicago blitzed Milwaukee at Glendale, Ariz. Nick Franklin homered for the Brewers' lone run.

Indians 6, Reds 4

Jose Ramirez collected three hits to lead Cleveland past Cincinnati at Goodyear, Ariz. Tony Cruz went deep for the Reds.

Cubs 5, Royals 3

Kyle Hendricks threw four shutout innings in Chicago's victory over Kansas City at Surprise, Ariz. Ian Rice and Trey Martin homered for the Cubs. The Royals managed just four hits.

Mariners 11, Padres 7

Nelson Cruz, Tuffy Gosewisch and Taylor Motter drove in two runs apiece as Seattle outscored San Diego in Peoria, Ariz. Padres starter Dinelson Lamet left in the second inning due to pain in his right (throwing) elbow, and the San Diego Union-Tribune reported that he is likely to miss the first month of the season.

Giants 5, Athletics 1

Johnny Cueto threw 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, and Pablo Sandoval homered as San Francisco won at Oakland in the opener of the Bay Bridge Series. Dexter Fowler collected two of the Athletics' six hits.

Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 3

Taylor Clarke fired five shutout innings, guiding Arizona past Colorado in Scottsdale, Ariz. Pat Valaika went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer for the Rockies.

Dodgers 4, Angels 2

Chris Taylor and Yasiel Puig hit seventh-inning homers to lift Los Angeles to a win at Anaheim in the opener of the Freeway Series. The Angels got homers from Zack Cozart and Mike Trout.
