The Hilltoppers baseball team was on the road Monday afternoon to
take on the Meridian Hawks in Macon. The history is deep between
these two teams. There is even a really good book entitled "One Shot
at Forever: A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach, and a Magical Baseball
Season" about the 1971 Macon Baseball Team that advanced to state
but had to go through the Mount Pulaski Baseball Team led by future
MLB player and Mount Pulaski High School graduate Dennis Werth to
get there. According to Werth, there are plans to make the book into
a movie. Check out the book, boys. Who knows? There could be a
future Kevin Costner among the Hilltoppers team or a even a Charlie
Sheen.
Okay on to the baseball game.
The Hilltoppers were a little rough around the field on Monday
afternoon. The team committed more errors than runs scored. Not a
good sign. But the young team is learning and as a work in progress
a 7-4 loss to a powerhouse program like Meridian is not bad. Mount
Pulaski took advantage of Meridian's mistakes and hung in there.
After the Hawks scored the first three runs of the game in the
bottom of the first inning off Tanner Farris, Mount Pulaski bounced
back to get a run in the top of the second inning. A walk to Farris
started things off. He then stole second, went to third on a passed
ball, and came racing home on the catcher's error.
By the top of the fourth inning, Mount Pulaski found themselves down
5-1, but again they plated another run themselves. In the fourth
inning Drew Martin singled to left and then pretty much the same
thing happened again for the Hilltoppers. Martin stole second, went
to third on a wild pitch and scored on the catcher's error.
By the time the seventh inning rolled around Mount Pulaski trailed
7-2, but threatened. Austin Killion reached base on a walk and he
was followed by Ian Schneider taking one for the team as they like
to say. The HBP to Schneider put runners on first and second. A wild
pitch advances those guys over and then back-to-back walks to Dawson
Combs and Todd Kelly scored one run. Ben Fricke's fielder's choice
scored another run. The Hilltoppers left a couple ducks on the pond
as Martin lined out to the second baseman to end the game. The final
score was 7-4.

Tanner Farris took the loss for Mount Pulaski. Farris threw four
innings and allowed four hits and four earned runs. He recorded nine
strikeouts.
The pitching staff for the Hawks combined to strike out 12
Hilltoppers and allow just three hits.
