Hilltoppers baseball has a tough day against the Athens Warriors

The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers
suffered a 16-4 loss on Wednesday afternoon to the Athens Warriors
at Bob Gasaway Field. Mount Pulaski started Todd Kelly was tagged
for eight runs in the first inning and for the younger Hilltoppers
there was little chance to bounce back after that. The Warriors just
kept adding runs to the scoreboard over the next few innings. The
score was 13-0 after three innings and after the Warriors at bat in
the fifth inning they held a pretty solid 16-0 lead.
Mount Pulaski managed to ruin the shutout in the bottom of the fifth
inning. With two outs in the inning the Hilltoppers put together a
rally and scored four runs. Brandon Kretzinger started it all with a
base hit. He was able to jog home on a Drew Martin triple. Martin
then scored on a double by Ben Fricke. Tanner Farris then singled to
score Fricke. Farris would score the final run for the Hilltoppers
thanks to an error by Athens. The final was an ugly 16-4 loss in a
short five-inning contest. Athens has had one of the better ball
clubs around Central Illinois now for quite a few years. Wait 'til
next year, boys.

Tanner Farris and Brandon Kretzinger had good days at the plate for
Mount Pulaski. Both guys were 2-for-3 in hitting and each scored a
run. Austin Killion and Todd Kelly also had hits for Mount Pulaski,
to go along with the big knocks from Martin and Fricke.
Kelly took the loss for the Hilltoppers. He was relieved by Grant
Davis.
