The Lincoln Railers Softball
Team won a thrilling extra inning contest on Tuesday versus Prairie
Central at Schweitzer Field. Playing without a key member of the
team, Sydney Sutherland, the team stepped up and according to
Lincoln Coach Darrin Worth, it was the best game the team had played
all year.
With Sutherland currently out with a concussion, Worth also noted
several of his young players are just banged up these days with
aching knees and spiked legs and so on. This group is young and
scrappy though and Worth was particularly proud after the win. His
comments coming up.
But first the scoring. Prairie Central scored a run in the second
inning on an RBI single by Brianna Seeman to take a 1-0 lead.
The Railers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with
Bayleigh Gillum driving in a run. The pitcher's duel continued into
the extra innings with Kerstin Osborne, who just signed yesterday to
play softball at Lincoln College, toeing the rubber for the Railers.
Osborne shut down Prairie Central in the eighth inning and this gave
Lincoln the chance for a game-winner in their half of the inning.
The Railers prevailed. A hit and three walks in the inning were
enough offense for Lincoln to literally walk away with victory.
Jacey Cooper drew the bases loaded walk and the freshman was
credited with the game-winning RBI.
A 2-1 win by Lincoln in an outstanding pitcher's duel under
beautiful sunny skies in Lincoln. Just a great day. Get these girls
healthy and the Lincoln Railers are hitting their strides at the
right time.
Osborne, who has just been a tank all season on the mound, as Worth
likes to say, picks up the win. Her day's work included tossing
eight innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out three
batters.
Faith Bachtold took the loss for Prairie Central.
Ryleigh Lamb was the hitting machine for the Railers. She was
2-for-4 at the plate and had a great at bat in that eighth inning
that resulted in a single for Lincoln. Osborne, the lone senior, was
also 2-for-4 with a run scored. Emily Paulus had the other hit for
Lincoln.
Coach Worth had lots to say after this win and it goes without
saying, he was excited following this victory. "This was the best
game we played all year," he said. "Our defense was really really
good tonight.
[to top of second column] |
"Bayleigh Gillum at second base made a diving catch in the fourth
inning on a line drive, and to top that off she caught a pop fly and
threw it to first base to get a double play.
"Mya Kirgan stepped in at third base for the injured Sydney
Sutherland and she had a great defensive game.
"Ryleigh Lamb got her first hit of the year in the sixth inning, but
she was holding out on her best hit until the eighth inning.
"In the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied 1-1 Sydney
Worth was at third and Kerstin Osborne was at first with one out and
Emily Paulus up to bat. I thought with my best base runner at third
and one of my best bunters at the plate, I'd put the squeeze play
on.
"Emily layed a good bunt down and Sydney got a good jump, but the
third basemen made a great play, flipped it to home without
hesitation and it was a bang-bang play at the plate and Sydney was
out at the plate.
"In the bottom of the eighth inning with one out Aria Pumfrey drew a
walk.
"Then Ryleigh Lamb came up and got her second hit of the game to
make it first and second.
"Macailey Metelko came up and had a great at bat and drew a walk to
make the bases loaded.
"Then Jacey Cooper came up to bat and had another great at bat with
her third walk of the game and the game winning RBI," Coach Worth
said.
Barely taking a breath, Worth continued, "Kerstin Osborne pitched
another great game. What can I say about Kerstin? She has pitched
every game for us this year and she doesn't complain whatsoever,
even with her knees hurting. We play double headers on Saturday.
During the first game of the Mattoon game it went ten innings and
she pitched great. Well I told her I was thinking about pitching our
other pitcher and she said, "Coach, are you crazy. I want to pitch."
That's what kind of competitor she is.
"This game tonight was a true team victory. Everybody contributed.
If it wasn't at the plate, it was in the field. Our next game is
Friday against Rochester and we need these next two days off. We
have a few girls that are banged up and hopefully we can get Sydney
Sutherland back Friday," he concluded.
