[May 05, 2018]  Albert Pujols got his 3,000th career hit and Garrett Richards pitched 6 ? scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-0 Friday night at Safeco Field.

Pujols, 38, became the 32nd player in major league history to reach the milestone with his fifth-inning single off Seattle starter Mike Leake. He's the second Dominican-born player to accomplish the feat, after Adrian Beltre. Pujols added a two-run single in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.

After a lineout and a walk in his first two at-bats, Pujols delivered a single to right field for the historic hit. Angels teammates mobbed Pujols, the Seattle crowd of 41,705 gave him a standing ovation and the ball and first-base bag were taken out of play.

Richards (4-1) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out eight. Justin Anderson and Jim Johnson combined for 2 ? innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts to preserve the shutout.

Dodgers 4, Padres 0

Rookie right-handed starter Walker Buehler and relievers Tony Cingrani, Yimi Garcia and Adam Liberatore pitched the first combined no-hitter in team history as Los Angeles defeated San Diego at Monterrey, Mexico.

Buehler, the Dodgers' first-round pick (24th overall) in the 2015 draft, issued three walks with eight strikeouts and faced only two batters over the limit for his six-inning gem. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound 23-year-old threw 93 pitches with 59 for strikes.

The left-handed Cingrani worked the seventh and issued two walks with a strikeout. Right-hander Garcia struck out two in a perfect eighth. Left-hander Liberatore closed out the no-hitter with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. Dodgers pitchers had 13 strikeouts with five walks. The no-hitter was the Dodgers first since 2014 and the 23rd in franchise history.

Yankees 7, Indians 6

Rookie Miguel Andujar delivered the game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as New York squandered a five-run lead and overcame two wild pitches by closer Aroldis Chapman in a victory over Cleveland at Yankee Stadium.

Andujar gave the Yankees their 13th win in 14 games when he blooped a 1-2 breaking ball from Cody Allen into right field. Andujar's hit scored Giancarlo Stanton, who began the winning rally with a double off Alexi Ogando (0-1). After getting the hit, Andujar rounded first and was mobbed by teammates in short right field.

The Yankees seemingly had the game won in the top of the ninth as Chapman was one strike away while runners were at second and third. On a 0-2 pitch to Jason Kipnis, Chapman threw the ball over catcher Gary Sanchez's mask and Yan Gomes raced in and easily scored the tying run.

Nationals 7, Phillies 3

Bryce Harper homered in each of the first two innings, and Matt Adams added another homer as Washington stretched its winning streak to six with a victory over Philadelphia in D.C.

Manager Dave Martinez shifted Harper to the leadoff spot earlier this week, and that move has worked well. Harper led off with a homer in the first -- his second leadoff homer in three days -- and added a two-run shot in the second. The right fielder has now homered four times in the four games since shifting to the top spot. He finished 2-for-5 with those three RBIs.

Starter Gio Gonzalez (4-2) returned after a 39-minute rain delay in the fourth and left after five with the Nationals holding a 7-0 lead. He gave up only two hits and struck out five with two walks.

Astros 8, Diamondbacks 0

Right-hander Gerrit Cole struck out a career-high 16 and gave up only one hit in his first career shutout and Houston broke a three-game losing streak with a victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

The top four in the Houston lineup -- George Springer, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel -- combined for 11 hits, eight runs and seven RBIs for the Astros, who entered the series with a 28-inning scoreless drought and three losses in their past four games.

Cole has 77 strikeouts in his first seven starts with the Astros, the most for a pitcher in his first seven starts with a new team in big league history, according to Elias. Chris Sale had 73 with Boston last year. Cole struck out the side in the second, third and fourth innings and threw 114 pitches.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 2

Miles Mikolas threw seven shutout innings as St. Louis edged Chicago in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

In upping his record to 4-0, Mikolas scattered seven hits, walked none and fanned four. It was the fourth straight outing in which Mikolas has lasted seven innings and his fifth time in six starts in which he hasn't walked a batter. In 40 innings, Mikolas has whiffed 31 and walked only two.

Mikolas left after Kris Bryant started the eighth with a double. Three relievers picked up the last six outs, with Bud Norris pitching the ninth to garner his seventh save in as many tries.

Red Sox 5, Rangers 1

Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 with two homers and Rick Porcello remained unbeaten as Boston posted a victory over Texas in Arlington.

Mookie Betts slammed his major league-leading 13th homer and J.D. Martinez also went deep for the Red Sox, who avenged Thursday's series-opening loss in the four-game set.

[to top of second column]

Porcello (5-0) allowed one run and three hits in six innings while winning his seventh straight decision dating to last season. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one as the Red Sox won for the fourth time in the past six games.

Giants 9, Braves 5

Visiting San Francisco combined a six-run outburst in the second inning with a solid start from Chris Stratton to end Atlanta's five-game winning streak.

Stratton (3-2) was making his first career start against the Braves and allowed three runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out six and helped the Giants win for the fifth time in their last six games.

Most of Stratton's support came in the second inning, when the Giants plated six runs against Atlanta starter Mike Foltynewicz (2-2). The right-hander gave up a season-high six runs on nine hits in five innings and lost for the first time since April 10. It was his first time allowing more than two earned runs in an outing this season.

Rockies 8, Mets 7

German Marquez tossed six solid innings and Colorado scored five runs in the first inning before holding on for a win over New York at Citi Field.

Six of the first seven Rockies to bat in the first inning reached base, as Colorado went on to win its third straight.

The Mets dropped their fourth straight game hours after general manager Sandy Alderson announced the team would designate for assignment one-time ace Matt Harvey after Harvey declined to be optioned to the minor leagues. Harvey, who started for the National League in the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field, was 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA in eight games (four starts) this season.

Pirates 6, Brewers 4

Starling Marte hit an inside-the-park home run, one of three Pittsburgh homers in a win over host Milwaukee.

Corey Dickerson hit an upper-deck shot and David Freese hit a homer in the ninth for the Pirates, who broke a four-game overall losing streak and an eight-game road losing streak.

Pittsburgh starter Nick Kingham (2-0), in his second career game, allowed four runs and four hits -- two of them homers -- in 5 1/3 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Rays 6, Blue Jays 2

Johnny Field hit a home run and two doubles, Brad Miller hit a two-run homer, reliever Ryan Yarbrough pitched five shutout innings and Tampa Bay defeated visiting Toronto in the opener of a three-game series.

Matt Duffy also had three hits for the Rays.

Yarbrough (2-1) took over in the third and held the Blue Jays to one hit over five innings, retiring 15 in a row after allowing a third-inning leadoff single to Dalton Pompey. The left-hander struck out four.

A's 6, Orioles 4

Jed Lowrie hit the tiebreaking single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Oakland squandered a three-run lead before getting a win over Baltimore at the Oakland Coliseum.

Lowrie helped the A's win for the 11th time in 17 games by producing his 15th multi-hit game of the season and driving in his 10th go-ahead run with a base hit off Brad Brach (0-2).

Khris Davis hit a three-run homer and Matt Olson hit a solo homer in the first inning off Andrew Cashner. Marcus Semien added insurance with an eighth-inning RBI single.

Twins 6, White Sox 4

Third baseman Eduardo Escobar ripped two solo home runs and doubled in a third run, and Brian Dozier and Logan Morrison added solo homers as Minnesota scored early and beat Chicago at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

Dozier, who entered the night mired in a 3-for-43 slump that saw his batting average fall to .226, was moved from the leadoff spot to second in the order, and he responded with three hits, including a triple and the homer.

The Twins, who finished with 12 hits, won for the second time in three games, but it was just their third win in their last 15 games.

Reds 4, Marlins 1

Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall homered in the first inning as Cincinnati earned a rare home win, beating Miami at the Great American Ball Park.

Suarez's homer, his fourth of the season, was a three-run shot to left that followed a Jose Peraza double and Alex Blandino's walk.

Duvall's homer, his fifth, was a solo shot that came three pitches after Suarez went deep. Duvall, however, sent his homer to the opposite field, just over the glove of right fielder Brian Anderson.
