Seattle Mariners second baseman
Robinson Cano fractured the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand
when he was hit by a fastball in the third inning against the
Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
The eight-time All-Star could be facing surgery that would sideline
him for an undetermined period of time.
Cano was hit on the back of the hand near the pinky finger by an
inside fastball from Tigers left-handed starter Blaine Hardy. He was
attended to by a trainer and left the game, replaced in the lineup
by Andrew Romine. The hand and wrist were placed in a soft cast.
--The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Chase Anderson on the
10-day disabled list due to a stomach illness and recalled
right-hander Freddy Peralta from Triple-A Colorado Springs to start
on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.
Peralta, 21, made the most of it, striking out 13 in his major
league debut as the visiting Brewers beat the Rockies 7-3.
Peralta, whose parents watched him pitch as a professional for the
first time, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a
one-out single to David Dahl. He then struck out Charlie Blackmon
and left after throwing 98 pitches.
-- Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout was not in the
starting lineup against the Minnesota Twins.
It was a scheduled day off for Trout, who had started all 39 of the
Angels' games this season before sitting Sunday. He ended up
pinch-hitting for Kole Calhoun in the seventh inning and struck out
looking against Ryan Pressly in the Angels' 2-1 victory.
Trout, who stayed in the game to play defense, is batting .315 with
12 homers and 25 RBIs. He also has eight stolen bases.
--Mariners manager Scott Servais rejoined the team in Detroit on
Sunday after being away for two days to attend his daughter's
college graduation.
Servais' daughter, Jackie, received her Master's degree from Ole
Miss. The elder Servais said he had a 3 a.m. wake-up call Sunday to
arrive in time to manage against the Tigers.

Servais missed two games -- a Saturday doubleheader after Friday's
single game was postponed. The Mariners lost Sunday, 5-4.
--The New York Mets activated right-hander Jacob deGrom from the
10-day disabled list to make the start against the Philadelphia
Phillies, but he didn't last long.
The 29-year-old was on the DL with a hyperextended throwing elbow,
and he was wild in his first start back, walking three batters and
striking out two in one inning, the shortest outing of his career.
The Phillies hit 20 foul balls off him, and he threw 45 pitches.
New York optioned left-hander Buddy Baumann to Triple-A Las Vegas to
open the roster spot.
--The St. Louis Cardinals activated right-hander Adam Wainwright
from the 10-day disabled list, and he started against the San Diego
Padres.
Wainwright, 36, had missed four starts due to inflammation in his
right elbow. He allowed two runs on three hits and issued a
career-high six walks with three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
In a corresponding move, right-hander John Brebbia was optioned to
Triple-A Memphis. Brebbia, 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six games with St.
Louis, took the loss Saturday in the Cardinals' 2-1, 13-inning
contest against the Padres.
--The Toronto Blue Jays called up right-hander Deck McGuire from
Triple-A Buffalo and sent down infielder Lourdes Gurriel to the same
club.
Gurriel has struggled in his major league debut, batting just .206
and striking out 17 times in 70 plate appearances. The club also
designated right-hander Carlos Ramirez for assignment.
McGuire was 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in five games with Buffalo this
season. He did not pitch Sunday against the Yankees.
