Obituary
Robert L. Gasaway, 80, of Mount
Pulaski, passed away at 6:44 a.m. Tuesday May 22,
2018 at his residence.
Bob was born on September 17, 1937 in Latham, to
Grover and Ethel (Alexander) Gasaway.
Robert attended Latham Grade School, Mount Pulaski
High School and graduated from Illinois State
University in Normal. He was the Principal, teacher
and coach at Lake Fork Grade School from 1960-1971
and then moved on to Mount Pulaski Grade School
where he taught and coached until his retirement in
2002.
While coaching he took 26 junior high teams to the
IESA State Basketball Tournament. He won three State
Championships in 1980, 1994 and 2001, three 3rd
place finishes and two 4th place finishes. His
career coaching totals were 1,100 wins with only 287
losses. He won 31 State Tournament games. He was
inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches
Association Hall of Fame Class of 1991. He also
coached the Bruin Baseball team for many years and
had a 3rd place finish in the 1999 IESA State
Baseball Tournament.
His ultimate honors included the dedication of the
Bob Gasaway Gymnasium at Mount Pulaski Grade School
in November 2014 by the Mount Pulaski School Board
and community and the dedication of the Robert L.
Gasaway Baseball Field by the Mount Pulaski Township
Park District in 2013. |
Bob is survived by his brother Glenn
(Mary) Gasaway of Overland Park, KS, two nephews,
Kent (Rhonda) Gasaway of Prairie Village, KS, and
Richard (Tammy) Gasaway of Coral Springs, FL, two
nieces, Kristi Gasaway of Los Angeles, Ca. and Judy
Gould of Edgemont, AK, as well as three great nieces
Mallory, Hannah, Lacey and two great nephews Grant
and Brett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two
sisters, Fern Gasaway and Vera Watson and one
brother Carl Gasaway.
Services for Bob will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday May 31,
2018 at the Bob Gasaway Gymnasium in the Mount
Pulaski Grade School. Visitation will be from
4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday May 30, 2018 also at the
school.
Memorials may be made to Mount Pulaski Grade School
Bruin Basketball, Mount Pulaski Grade School Bruin
Baseball or the Mount Pulaski Township Park District
(Robert L. Gasaway Field).
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount
Pulaski is entrusted with arrangements.
