Lincoln was in charge early in the contest as
they built a, 18-9 first half lead. The nine-point lead would
prove to be their largest of the game. WPU was able to trim the
lead to just one point at 20-19, but a late surge by Lincoln
that included six made free throws in a row helped the Lynx take
a 39-32 lead into the halftime break.
The Statesmen came out of the break with intensity and went on a
12-to-5 run to tie the score at 44-44. From there, the two teams
traded leads all the way up to a 70-70 tie score with just 18
seconds left in the game. A made free throw by LC senior guard
Lejavius Johnson (Glenwood) put Lincoln up by one, but a WPU
field goal and two made free throws put William Penn up 74-71
with just five ticks left on the clock. Despite the little time
remaining in the game, LC was able to get off two shots before
freshman guard Deandre Freeman (Chicago) hit a two-point field
goal with no time remaining on the clock to make the final score
74-73 in favor of WPU.
Lincoln junior Trayvon Tyler (Rockford) led his team in scoring
by going 10-for-17 from the field and totaling 26 points in all.
Tyler also led in assists with eight. Lejavious Johnson reached
double digits in scoring as well for LC with 14 points.
Lincoln Coach Pat Lepper saw the result as an opportunity for
growth for his team. “It was a tough loss, but our guys played
hard and stuck together. We are learning a lot playing against
strong competition and we will get better.”
Next up for Lincoln is an away game on November 3rd at
Lindenwood-Belleville University. Tip off is set for 3:00 PM.
