Local Veteran organizations receive gift of book from Bill Donath
Donath to offer "Generosity" at discounted prices to veterans at two upcoming events

[November 07, 2018]  Robert Sullivan, Commander of American Legion Post 263, and Casey Lore, Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1756 each received a copy of the book, Generosity, The Story of Logan County During The Great War, for their respective organizations.

The books were donated by Bill Donath, author of the book, as a commemoration of 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day. The end of WW I came with the signing of the Armistice at 11:00 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918. Armistice Day continued with that name until after WW II when many more men and women became veterans. The name of the remembrance day became Veteran's Day to honor all past and future veterans of United States of America military service.

The presentations took place at the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society where the men were surrounded by the Society's U.S. military collection. The Honor Roll at the right of the photo, compiled in 1919, by a cousin of Donath, lists the names of men and women who served during WW I. All the people listed there have a short history included in the book.

The book also includes a history of the efforts of Logan County residents who worked to support the war effort through the Red Cross, the sale of Liberty Bonds, support of orphans organizations, committees for conservation of food and fuel, etc.  There are also several hundred period photographs accompany the stories in the book.

Logan County veterans, who wish to purchase a signed copy of the book, will have an opportunity to do so on November 11 at the Logan County Tourism office in the Lincoln Depot and on November 12 at the American Legion Post in Lincoln during their respective Veterans Day observance services. The reduced price, for veterans only, on those two days will be $15.

Normally the cost is $35 at the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society, across the street from the Depot, and at the Gift Shop at Lincoln Heritage Museum, Lincoln College. The additional $20, at those locations, goes to the support of the work these two fine organizations do for Logan County.

History buffs who wish to learn more about Logan County and WW I can do so at the Lincoln Public Library and the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society by asking to see the digital copy of the Logan County War History Committee collection on computers at these two locations. The history was compiled in 1919, lead by the Abraham Lincoln Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
