[November 09, 2018]    Scott McCarron, one of six players with a chance at winning the PGA Tour Champions' yearly title, sits alone in third place after the opening round of the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship on Thursday.

McCarron shot a 6-under-par 65 at Phoenix Country Club, leaving him two strokes back of both Paul Goydos and Tim Petrovic. Neither Goydos nor Petrovic is in the running for the season championship.

Points leader Bernhard Langer is tied for 21st in the 35-player field following a 70. Scott Parel, second in the standings, is tied for 26th following a 71. Langer and Parel are the only players assured of the season title if they win this week.

The other contenders are Miguel Angel Jimenez (tied for 16th after a 69 on Thursday), Jerry Kelly (tied for 12th, 68) and David Toms (tied for 16th, 69).

If the first-round result holds through the weekend, Langer would emerge with his fifth season championship.

McCarron's round featured eagles on the par-4 fifth hole and the par-5 18th hole. At No. 5, he knocked in a long shot from a greenside bunker. On the closing hole, he sank a putt after reaching the green in two strokes.
