Six strokes back and in sixth place entering
the final round, Singh racked up 10 birdies and no bogeys to get
to a record 22-under 262 for the tournament. That proved to be
plenty for the 55-year-old Fijian, as Tim Petrovic finished
second at 18 under after shooting 70.
"I really didn't think I had any chance the way the guys were
scoring," Singh said afterward. "I thought if I could get to 20,
I may finish in the top five."
Scott McCarron began the day with a one-stroke lead and a chance
to finish atop the Charles Schwab Cup standings with a win, but
he stumbled to a round of 72 that included a pair of double
bogeys, finishing in a tie for third.
With McCarron falling out of contention, Germany's Bernhard
Langer -- who shot 67 to finish in a tie for 13th at 11 under --
claimed the Cup and the $1 million bonus for the fifth time,
including the fourth in the last five years.
"It never gets old," Langer said. "At age 61 to do it is quite
an achievement. Maybe there's another one in me, you never
know."
Wes Short Jr. (who shot 69) joined McCarron at 17 under in third
place. Woody Austin (64) and Canada's Stephen Ames (72), who
authored a 61 of his own on Saturday, shared fifth place at 16
under.
But the day belonged to Singh, who opened with birdies on his
first two holes and on four of his first five. He added five
birdies in his final six holes, including at Nos. 17 and 18.
"I just kept making putts," said Singh, who won for the third
time this season and the fourth time on the PGA Tour Champions.
Defending champion Kevin Sutherland finished in a tie for eighth
at 13 under after shooting 67.
