Thompson, 23, has fallen to eighth in the Rolex
Rankings during a trying 2018 in which she has failed to win and
took a month off to address personal issues.
She began 2018 ranked No. 4 and rose to second following a tie
for sixth place at the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic to begin
the season. Thompson tied for second the following week and had
a stretch in which she reeled off three consecutive top 10s,
included a tie for fifth at the U.S. Women's Open the first week
in June.
The last of those came at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship
later that month. Thompson withdrew from the Women's British
Open less than a month later, citing the need to "recharge my
mental batteries."
She returned to tie for 15th at the KPMG Women's PGA
Championship, but has only one top 10 -- a tie for ninth at the
Cambia Portland Classic -- in eight events since returning to
the LPGA Tour. Meanwhile, she dropped to eighth in the rankings
following a tie for 19th at the TOTO Japan Classic, her lowest
ranking since early 2017.
McAlpine, a former Scottish Amateur champion, began caddying for
Thompson in March of that year. He quit his job selling kids
golf equipment in Scotland to come caddie for Thompson, but
confirmed to Golfweek that he will not be on her bag this week.
If Thompson doesn't win this week's tournament, which she lost a
final-round lead to Ariya Jutanugarn at last year, it will mark
her first winless season since 2013.
