[November 19, 2018]    The Lincoln College Men’s Basketball team suffered two losses over the weekend to teams ranked in the top 25 of the latest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics poll.

On Friday evening, LC faced the 23rd ranked Bethel College Pilots and lost 87-77. The Pilots won the battle in the paint, outscoring Lincoln 32-20 under the basket and 13-8 in second chance points. Bethel took a 37-22 lead into halftime and held on for a ten-point victory (87-77).

Four Lincoln players scored in double-digits in this contest with 18 points from sophomore guard Darnell Latham Jr. (Chicago) leading the way. Lejavius Johnson (Glenwood) had 16 points, Trayvon Tyler (Rockford) had 14 points and Cahokia’s Montez Crumble had 13.

Things did not get any easier for the Lynx on Saturday when they took on the #16 ranked host school from the University of St. Francis. LC got off to a strong start against SFU and led by as many as ten points mid-way through the first half (23-13). At that point, St. Francis began chipping away at the Lincoln lead and cut it to just three by halftime (37-34).

In the second half, St. Francis took the lead back quickly, but was unable to distance themselves from Lincoln by more than a few points. With 5:03 left to play, Lincoln’s Lejavius Johnson hit a jumper to tie the game at 62-62, but a 12-to-4 run of points by USF put the game out of reach and secured a 74-66 win for St. Francis.

Trayvon Tyler led LC with 22 points against USF. Darnell Latham Jr. had 17 points and Julian Powell (Baytown, TX) was good for a double-double, recording 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

“We learned a lot this weekend by testing ourselves against nationally ranked opponents,” said Lincoln’s head coach Pat Lepper. “We got to see how tough you have to be both physically and mentally to win at this level which will help us grow as a team.”

Lincoln will travel to William Woods University on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
