Kris Letang scored from the top
of the slot on a power play at 1:20 of overtime Thursday to give the
host Pittsburgh Penguins a wild, 7-6 win over the rival Washington
Capitals.
Letang finished with two goals and an assist, Jake Guentzel scored
twice and Evgeni Malkin had a goal and two assists for Pittsburgh in
its season opener.
T.J. Oshie scored twice in 21 seconds in the third period for a 6-6
tie and added an assist for Washington, which was coming off a 7-0
rout of the Boston Bruins in its opener on Wednesday.
Blue Jackets 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)
Artemi Panarin scored at the 2:11 mark in overtime to give visiting
Columbus a victory over Detroit in the season opener for both teams.
Panarin skated in from the blue line to the right circle and fired
the puck to the far side past Jimmy Howard. Nick Foligno and Markus
Nutivaara assisted on the game-winner.
Cam Atkinson and Josh Anderson also scored for the Blue Jackets,
while Panarin, Anthony Duclair, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Brandon
Dubinsky contributed assists. Tyler Bertuzzi and Dennis Cholowski
scored for Detroit, which has lost seven consecutive times to
Columbus.

Predators 3, Rangers 2
P.K. Subban scored the tiebreaking goal with 16:32 left in the third
period, and Nashville spoiled the coaching debut of David Quinn with
a victory at New York.
The defenseman gave the reigning Presidents' Trophy champions the
lead after Rangers defenseman Adam McQuaid was injured by a high
stick that went uncalled. Colton Sissons won the faceoff in the left
circle, made a quick pass to Mattias Ekholm, who dished to Subban,
whose blast from the right point sailed over Henrik Lundqvist's left
shoulder.
Sissons added an empty-net goal, which turned out to be the
game-winner when Pavel Buchnevich scored on a deflection with 24.1
seconds remaining.
Blackhawks 4, Senators 3 (OT)
Patrick Kane scored 38 seconds into overtime as Chicago came back to
beat host Ottawa in the season opener for both teams.
Alex DeBrincat and Jonathan Toews scored in the first period, and
Brent Seabrook forced overtime with a third-period goal for Chicago.
Goalie Cam Ward, making his Blackhawks debut after spending his
first 13 seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes, recorded 22 saves.
Max Lajoie scored in his NHL debut for Ottawa, which also got goals
from Zack Smith and Colin White.
Islanders 2, Hurricanes 1 (OT)
Josh Bailey scored on a power play 43 seconds into overtime, and
goalie Thomas Greiss made 45 saves to give New York coach Barry
Trotz a successful debut in a victory against Carolina at Raleigh,
N.C.
Valtteri Filppula scored in the second period for the Islanders.
Carolina's Jordan Staal was credited with a tying goal with 1:35
left in regulation when Dougie Hamilton's blast bounced off him and
into the net. The Hurricanes had been going with an extra skater for
about 90 seconds.
Jets 5, Blues 1
Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an
assist, and Winnipeg opened its season in impressive fashion,
recording a victory at St. Louis.
The result continued Winnipeg's recent dominance over its Central
Division rivals. The Jets are now 9-2-0 over their past 11 games
against the Blues, including six wins in their past seven visits to
St. Louis.

Three third-period Jets goals in less than a two-minute span blew
open what had been a closely contested game.
Stars 3, Coyotes 0
Dallas scored three times over a 1-minute, 36-second span of the
second period, and Ben Bishop turned away 30 shots for the 25th
shutout of his career for a victory over visiting Arizona in the
season-opening game for both teams.
The win granted new Stars coach Jim Montgomery success in his NHL
coaching debut.
Devin Shore scored the first goal of the season for the Stars, and
Alexander Radulov and John Klingberg quickly followed with tallies.
Avalanche 4, Wild 1
Mikko Rantanen and Carl Soderberg had a goal and an assist each,
Nathan MacKinnon and J.T. Compher also scored, and Colorado beat
visiting Minnesota in the season opener for both teams.
Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves for Colorado, which put the game away
with two late empty-net goals. Zach Parise had a goal and Devyn
Dubnyk stopped 36 shots for Minnesota.
The Wild were fortunate to be down only 2-1 after two periods.
Minnesota managed just five shots in the first 20 minutes and eight
in the second frame while the Avalanche kept throwing pucks at
Dubnyk. Colorado wound up with a 40-21 edge in shots on goal.
Flyers 5, Golden Knights 2
Wayne Simmonds scored two goals, and Brian Elliott made 23 saves as
visiting Philadelphia cruised to a victory over defending Western
Conference champion Vegas in the season opener for both teams at Las
Vegas.
Robert Hagg had a goal and an assist, and Oskar Lindblom and Scott
Laughton also scored goals for Philadelphia, which finished third in
the Metropolitan Division last season. Jakub Voracek added two
assists.

Jonathan Marchessault and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare each scored for
Vegas, which before the game raised championship banners for winning
both the Pacific Division and the Western Conference during a
storybook expansion that ended up with a 4-1 series loss to the
Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup Final.
Bruins 4, Sabres 0
Brad Marchand had four assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 32 saves as
visiting Boston rebounded from an embarrassing season-opening loss
to shut out Buffalo.
Zdeno Chara, Ryan Donato, David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron scored
goals for the Bruins.
Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, the No. 1 pick in this year's
draft, played north of 22 minutes in his NHL debut. At 18 years, 175
days, he's the second-youngest player to appear in a game for the
Sabres behind fellow top pick Pierre Turgeon, who was 18 years, 41
days at the time of his first game in 1987.
