Logan County 4-H Members Observe National Celebration

The 4-H’ers in Logan County will join six million other youth currently in 4-H celebrating National 4-H Week Oct. 7-13 with a theme of “Inspire Kids to Do”. Last year, 230 young people in Logan County were involved in 4-H Community clubs where, assisted by volunteer adult leaders, they learned about careers, leadership and citizenship. Another 1,285 youth were involved in 4-H through school, after school and community-partner organizations.

”The 4-H’ers learn by doing philosophy encourages youth to experiment, innovate, and think independently, said Carissa Davis, University of Illinois Extension Youth Development Educator. “4-H grows confident kids who tackle issues that matter most in their communities.” Illinois 4-H members prepare for their future by studying careers related to their 4-H project. “They choose from more than 100 projects to study,” said Davis. Topics range from rocketry, computer game design or public speaking to photography, animal science, nutrition, and more.

Local 4-H members have been “inspired to do” in a number of ways. JR Lynn, a 16 year old 4-H member of Cloverdale 4-H says “I’ve learned so much from my 4-H Calf Scramble project and all the wonderful mentors I had. I now strive not only to learn new skills from experts but to be a teacher myself. I always want to remember to learn by seeking a great guide and once I have mastered a skill to pass it along to someone else who is wanting to learn.”

Cavit Schempp, a 15 year old 4-H member of the Atlanta Ag 4-H club states “From participating in 4-H I have built up confidence that I have carried into other activities. I hope to help others achieve their personal growth goal the same way I have gained mine.”

Miranda Nelson, a 15 year old 4-H member of the Middletown 4-H’ers, states “Doing community service has helped me grow in leadership skills and responsibility. It has made me realize how important it is to do for others and reach out to help those who need it.”

4-H club membership is open to youth aged 8 – 18. Youth 5 to 7 years of age may join the 4-H Cloverbud program. To learn more about Logan County 4-H and further information on how to enroll your child in a local club, contact the Logan County 4-H office at 732-8289.
