[October 11, 2018]   LINCOLN - On Sunday afternoon, dozens of people, many of them children gathered on Broadway Street in downtown Lincoln to enjoy the sights and sounds of a large collection of fire trucks.

The trucks were part of the Fifth Annual Fire Truck Parade and Truck Show hosted by the Logan County Fire Fighters Association. The collection of trucks included vehicles from throughout the county.

In addition to getting to see the vehicles, children were given gifts such as coloring books and fireman hats. Also, a parade isn't a parade without some candy, so the kids were ready for whatever they might have tossed in their direction as the vehicles arrived downtown.

The annual event is the kick off of National Fire Safety week each year. The purpose is not only to let the kids explore the fire trucks, but to also learn about fire prevention, and to develop a friendly relationship with firefighters.

Often times, when a home is engulfed in fire, one of the primary difficulties firefighters face is when a child in fear will hide or resist help from a firefighter. Developing relationships with the fire department in non-emergency settings help children to understand that the firefighters are people who can be trusted and can help them when they are in an emergency situation.
