Third-period flurry sends Flames past Leafs

[October 30, 2018]  Sean Monahan and Elias Lindholm scored 55 seconds apart in the third period, and the visiting Calgary Flames defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 Monday night.

Monahan and Lindholm also picked up an assist each. Michael Frolik had an empty-net goal for the Flames at 19:54 of the third period.

Nazem Kadri scored a late third-period goal for the Maple Leafs.

All four Toronto losses this season have been at home. The Maple Leafs were playing their first full game without center Auston Matthews, who is out at least four weeks with a shoulder injury.

Calgary goaltender Mike Smith stopped 24 shots.

Toronto goaltender Frederik Andersen made 31 saves.

The Flames had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal in the first period and forced about three good saves from Andersen.

The Maple Leafs started the second period on the power play, a carryover from the first period when Calgary's James Neal took an interference penalty at 19:19.

The Flames failed to generate anything from their own power play after Toronto's Patrick Marleau was called for interference at 6:43 of the second period.

After Toronto's John Tavares blasted a shot wide of the Flames goal in the dying seconds of the second, the Maple Leafs jammed around the net. Tavares swept the puck into the net, but it was after the buzzer, and the goal was waved off.

Calgary had a 24-15 edge in shots on goal after two periods.

The Flames scored on a power play at 5:39 of the third period when Monahan scored on the rebound from Lindholm's shot for his fifth goal of the season. Zach Hyman was off for interference.

Calgary scored again at 6:34 when Lindholm snapped home his eighth goal of the season from the slot on a setup by Johnny Gaudreau.

The Maple Leafs went on a power play at 14:06 of the third when Matthew Tkachuk was called for holding. Toronto had a two-man advantage 51 seconds later when Mark Giordano was called for interference.

The first penalty had just expired when Kadri scored his third goal of the season at 16:07 to cut the lead in half. Kadri was playing in his 500th NHL game Monday.

Frolik sealed the win with his fifth goal of the season.
