The Lincoln College Women’s Volleyball team ran their win streak to
three in a row Wednesday evening as they defeated the visiting
Harris Stowe State University Hornets three sets to one.
Lincoln raced out to a 9-0 lead in set one behind the accurate
serving of junior setter Emma Derry (Augustana). A Lincoln hitting
error gave Harris Stowe a chance to regroup and try to get back in
the match, but LC would enjoy a comfortable lead the rest of the set
to take it 25-14.
In set two, the Hornets defense caught up to Lincoln’s up-tempo
offense enough to keep the score close in the early going. Lincoln
eventually pulled ahead to lead 14-9, but a rash of hitting errors
and erratic passing opened the door to a 7-1 run by Harris Stowe to
put the Hornets up 16-15. The Lady Lynx were unable to recover after
losing the lead and eventually fell 25-18.
LC did not let the setback shake their confidence, and came back
with a strong effort in set three to regain control of the match. In
the set, junior right side hitter Mattie Giese (Highland Park) came
up big, recording four kills while fellow junior Elysa Smith
(Metamora) was good for three kills and block to help lift Lincoln
to a 25-16 set three victory.
With the momentum back on their side, the Lady Lynx dominated play
in set four to win it 25-13 and end the match.

Lincoln showed off a balanced attack on offense as five different
hitters recorded five or more kills. The overall kill leader for LC
was junior Kaylyn Hoffert with 15. Hoffert’s total was followed
closely by Elysa Smith’s 12 kills and 10 from Mattie Giese. Junior
Hannah Cameron (Lincoln) put down eight kills on the night while
junior Mikayla Seibert chipped in five.

The setting duo of Emma Derry and freshman Morgan Lolling (Lincoln)
accounted for a total of 47 set assists in the match with Derry
picking up 24 and Lolling dishing out 23.
“We showed some growth tonight as we did not let our mistakes in set
two rattle us to the point where we could not get back under
control,” said Lincoln Coach Mark Tippett. “Harris Stowe played hard
on defense and really made us work to earn points,” he added. It was
great to see our players step up to that challenge and raise their
level of play to get the win.”
Lincoln (4-7) will travel to Galesburg, Illinois this weekend to
participate in the two-day, Knox College Invitational Tournament.
