Obituary
Robert O. "Bob" Polley, 94, of
Atlanta, passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018,
at 8:32 a.m. at his home.
Funeral Services for Bob will be held on Wednesday,
September 12, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Atlanta
Christian Church with Mr. Don Green officiating.
Burial will be in the Atlanta Cemetery with Military
Rites accorded by Gresham Crutchley Post #341 of
Atlanta.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 11,
2018, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Atlanta
Christian Church, with Masonic Rites being accorded
at 7:00 p.m. by Atlanta Lodge #165 A.F. & A.M.
Additional visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m.
until time of service on Wednesday.
Robert O. Polley was born on August 31, 1924, north
of Atlanta, the son of Alva and Bertha Pauline
Chowning Polley. He was united in marriage with
Betty Jane Leathers on June 5, 1949, at the Oblong
Christian Church. She survives.
Also surviving are one son: Rick (Janet) Polley, one
daughter: Becky (Jim) Pinney; daughter-in-law: Lisa
Polley; two brothers: Wayne Polley and Jim Polley;
nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son: Robert O.
Polley II; two brothers; one sister; and one
great-granddaughter.
Bob graduated from the Hittle Township High School
in Armington, then received his Bachelors and
Masters Degrees from the University of Illinois. He
served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1951.
Bob had the honor of going on the Honor Flight to
Washington D.C. in October 2012. |
He taught Agriculture and Math
classes for the Hartsburg- Emden High School and was
an F.F.A. Sponsor for 32 years. He was a member of
the Future Farmers of America Foundation for 65
years. Bob received the Honorary State Farmer Degree
in 1977 and Honorary American Farmer Degree in 1981.
His hobbies included reading, gardening, and canning
tomatoes.
He was a lifetime member of the
National Education Association and the Illinois
Education Association, and a member of Dewitt- Logan
Retired Teachers Association.
Bob was a member and past elder of
the Atlanta Christian Church.
Bob was a member and past Master of the Atlanta
Masonic Lodge #165 A.F. & A.M., Bloomington
Consistory, & 32nd Degree Mason. He was past Worthy
Patron of Atlanta Chapter Order of Eastern Star and
a lifetime member of Lalla Rookh Chapter in
Springfield.
He was the first person to start the haylift relief
effort to South Carolina in 1986. Bob was the
Lincoln Courier Citizen of the Month in April 1988.
Memorials may be made to the Atlanta Christian
Church or Atlanta Rescue Squad.
