[September 25, 2018]    The Netherlands' Kiki Bertens, fresh off winning the KEB Hana Bank Korea Open in Sunday, endured a lengthy work day to earn a first-round victory Monday in the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan (China) Open.

Seeded 12th in Wuhan, Bertens needed 2 hours, 17 minutes to get past Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The match also featured a 2-hour, 23-minute rain delay and a court change.

Bertens overcame eight double faults and a poor first-serve rate (58 percent) to advance.

Fourteenth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain and 16th-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia both advanced with straight-set wins. Australia's Daria Gavrilova upset 10th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-2, 6-4.

American CoCo Vandeweghe was forced to retire in the third set of her match against Croatia's Donna Vekic due to a right ankle injury.

Tashkent Open

Seventeen-year-old Russian Anastasia Potapova pulled off a first-round upset, beating fourth-seeded Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Potapova was playing in just her second top-level WTA event of the year. She has reached the final of three second-level tournaments in 2018 without emerging as the champion in any of them.

Other first-round winners included fifth-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany, sixth-seeded Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia and eighth-seeded Dalila Jakupovic of Slovenia.
