WTA roundup: Banged-up Halep falls at Wuhan

[September 26, 2018]    Top-ranked Simona Halep of Romania fell 6-0, 7-5 to Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova in her first match at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan (China) Open on Tuesday.

 

Halep, who sustained a back injury in a pre-tournament practice session with Czech Petra Kvitova, told reporters afterward that she refused to retire in suffering defeat in 1 hour, 24 minutes. It's her second straight loss, as she was stunned in the first round of the U.S. Open.

Defending champion and fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia of France also fell, losing 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4) to Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in a 3-hour match.

Fifth-seeded Kvitova, a two-time winner in the four years of the event, bested Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic 6-3, 6-4. Third-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany advanced when American Madison Keys retired down 6-0, 4-1 with a knee injury, and 13th-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russia and 16th-seeded Ashleigh Barty of Australia each held on in three-set victories.

Spaniard Garbine Muguruza, the No. 14 seed, dominated in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic.

Other upsets on the day saw eighth-seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova fall to China's Wang Qiang 6-1, 3-6, 6-3; 11th-seeded Julia Goerges of Germany bested by American Sofia Kenin 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; and 12th-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands defeated by Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-2.

Tashkent Open

Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine upset top-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-3, 6-2 in the first round at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Third-seeded Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia also fell early, with Russian Vera Zvonareva claiming victory 6-1, 6-4.

Second-seeded Vera Lapko of Belarus and seventh-seeded Evgeniya Rodina of Russia advanced with straight-set wins.
