Emmy Winning Filmmaker Coming to Lincoln College
Barbara Allen Presentation is Open to the Public

Barbara E. Allen, a multiple Emmy Award winning filmmaker will be at Lincoln College Friday, April 12, to conduct seminars on editing, music in documentary film and music videos.

Allen is the latest in a series of guest lecturers through the College’s Contemporary Jazz Program. As with most of the other Contemporary Jazz guest artist events coordinated by Lead Faculty Dr. Denise La Grassa, time has been set aside for presentations that are open to the public and area high school band directors, music and fine arts students are especially encouraged to attend.

Allen founded the non-profit media enterprise, Middle Passage Productions. She produced the three-time Emmy Award winning documentary, Paper Trail: 100 Years of the Chicago Defender; the short film Morning Due, which won the Jury Prize for Best Film at the Langston Hughes Film Festival; DuSable to Obama: Chicago’s Black Metropolis which won two Emmy Awards; Colorblind: Rethinking Race, a 2012 Emmy Award winning documentary; and Standing on Common Ground: 10 Years Later, which also won an Emmy in 2016. Her films have been featured at Cannes Film Festival, The Chicago International Film Festival the Pan African Film and Television Festival.

In 2017 she produced the weekly PBS music series, The Experience with Dedry Jones. She is currently working on a new film titled Red Summer/Winter Blues.

In the morning, beginning at 10 a.m., she will work with students in the Radio, Television and New Media program on editing. In the afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. she will lead a discussion for Contemporary Jazz Students and the public on media imaging and music. Contemporary Jazz Students are currently working on music and production for their spring show, Langston in Lincoln.

The afternoon presentation, beginning at 3:00 p.m., will be at the Johnston Center for Performing Arts in the Contemporary Jazz classroom and is open to the public and to area teachers and students.
