Heartland Phi Beta Lambda members place in state competition

 

[April 17, 2019]   Heartland Community College students posted a strong showing at this month’s Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference.

Nine Heartland students placed in business-centric categories at the state competition held in Effingham, IL, April 5-6.

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is a national student organization that prepares members for careers in business. Members of PBL can compete in a variety of categories at the state and national level.

Students who placed first or second in state competition earlier this spring advance to represent Heartland at the PBL National competition in San Antonio, TX, June 23-28. Heartland students will compete against over 2,000 students representing 44 colleges and universities from throughout the United States.

Nine students returned from Effingham with top-three finishes in the competition.

Imani Sanchez – 1st Place, Client Services

Sarah Hastings – 1st Place, Retail Management & 2nd Place, Marketing Concepts

Ricky Walker – 3rd Place, Help Desk

Tiara Johnson – 3rd Place, Business Communications

“Heartland has had students advance to Nationals four years running, which is every year we have competed,” said Phi Beta Lambda advisor Linda Lambert. “As impressive as the students have been in competition, what we cannot measure is the relationships and connections that are made during this journey. They are a part of something more than attending classes. PBL students have represented the college in a great way.”

The mission of Phi Beta Lambda is to provide leadership training and service opportunities to students and is a national business organization that welcomes students in any major.

At PBL conferences, students compete and attend workshops as well as listen to keynote addresses. Through this Leadership Conference and Competition, students apply what they learn in the classroom.

Each month, Heartland’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter invites local business leaders to speak about entrepreneurship, networking, interviewing skills, business success and failures, leadership skills, and goal setting. It is this type of partnership and professional support that Phi Beta Lambda provides for their student and professional members.
