Sunday was an odd day in Lincoln. Though it
was the mid-part of April, the temperatures were cold enough that it
snowed, quite a bit. Fortunately, it was also warm enough that the
snow didn’t stay, but was on the ground just long enough to set the
atmosphere for a warm and inviting event at the American Legion Post
in Lincoln.

The day began early for the Sons of the American
Legion who got busy right away cooking up delicious breakfast foods
for the annual Humane Society of Logan County/American Legion
Baseball fundraiser breakfast.
When the doors opened at 8 a.m. it was a steady stream of guests
there to enjoy the great food while supporting a couple of really
worthy local causes.
Guests enjoyed scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, bacon,
ham, sausage gravy, biscuits, freshly made donuts, cut fruits,
coffee and juice.
For many the pattern was to come in, fill their
plates, find a seat, then rush over to the pie sale hosted by the
HSLC to grab up a delicious homemade dessert to take home for later.
The pie sale (with a few cakes as well) was manned by HSLC
volunteers with all the proceeds from that part of the event going
to support the no-kill shelter in Lincoln. The sale also sold out
before the 10 a.m. hour. Marilyn Wheat noted that they started the
morning with 56 items in the sale and people were snatching them up
like hot cakes!
Around the room it was fun to see so many families
gathered around the tables. Young and old alike were enjoying the
heart comfort food while sharing time together and of course,
talking about the weather!

In the kitchen the Sons of American Legion volunteers
worked steadily throughout the morning, and came close to running
out of food. With so many to serve, the group had made four large
pots of sausage gravy and they did run out and had to quickly put
together pot number five to finish out the last half hour of the
day.
The egg station was busy with one volunteer
constantly stirring up the scrambled eggs, while around the corner
another volunteer was kept busy cutting out those delicious donuts
for the fryer.
All in all, it was a good day for both organizations with hundreds
of guests served.
The money made by the HSLC will go directly to the daily operation
of the no-kill shelter in Lincoln. Dollars will help with food,
medical needs and supplies for the many animals the shelter serves.
The money earned by the Sons of the American Legion will support the
youth baseball program that is run each year for local youngsters.
