The Lincoln College Softball team had a great day at the plate on Monday in their two-game sweep of the visiting MacMurray College Highlanders. LC was able to end the first game in five innings by a score of 9-1 and shortened the second game to six innings as they outscored their opponents 10-2. The wins improve the team’s record to 7-23.

Lincoln’s Melissa Benson (Morris) and Rodjahnae DuPont-Barlow (Clinton) each had five-hit performances on the day. Benson was also able to accumulate four stolen bases. Brooke Friesner (Moweaqua) and Kerstin Osborne (Lincoln) each had two hits for Lincoln as well.

Starting pitcher Olivia Sanders (Clinton) pitched all five innings of game one to pick up the win. Sanders allowed just four hits, issued one walk and struck out three batters.

In game two, Kerstin Osborne went the distance giving up six hits, a walk and she recorded four strikeouts.

Lincoln Head Softball Coach Boyd Nowicki was pleased with his team’s performance. “I felt that these were must win games for us for a couple reason. First, we have battled some tough teams here lately and fell on the wrong end of things, so to feel the enjoyment of winning again is important as we start to get closer to the close of our season.

Second, we have played some great defensive games, but have fell short because our offense has not been producing like its capable of. Today our offense came alive. Everyone contributed with hits or RBI's today.”

Nowicki added, “Overall everyone did a great job and contributed to these wins. As always I can’t say enough for our two freshmen pitchers (Kerstin Osborne and Olivia Sanders) as well as their Catchers (Ali Nowicki, Katherine Fitch) and how well they work together. Then there is our what should be an All-American short stop this year Melissa Benson. Her numbers speak for themselves and to watch her go get a ball in the 5-6 hole and make a dart throw to first makes your mouth dropped. She's our Derek Jeter for sure!!”

Lincoln will look to keep their hot streak going on Tuesday when they travel to Eureka College for a doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 2:00 PM.
