LINCOLN
- If you are looking for a perennial plant to gift your
daughter/mother/grandmother on Mother's Day the garage and driveway
at 528 Decatur Street will be your “go to” place on Saturday
morning, May 11, as day lily specialist and gardener, Judy Monts,
and her professor husband, Bob, host what will be the final Monts’
Plant Sale to benefit world hunger.
|
The 2019 sale, which has become an annual event,
will be the last such sale to be hosted by the Monts family, as they
have plans to relocate to Texas.
The Monts sale is not your ordinary plant sale nor is Judy your
average day lily gardener. Her longstanding passion for growing the
lovely perennials became coupled with a passion for feeding the
hungry a few years back when she hosted her first plant sale,
designating all of the proceeds be earmarked for hunger needs. Since
that first one, all of the proceeds from each sale have become a
part of the Harvest of Talents for World Hunger and are designated
to feed starving people worldwide through the ministry of
International Disaster Emergency Service.
The Lincoln gardener's passion for the colorful day lilies has taken
her to the gardens of day lily growers in Illinois, Indiana,
Tennessee, Texas and Florida to acquire from hybridizers and she has
also purchased plants from auctions held all across the United
States. Her day lily collection has grown to include over 500
varieties, with some acquired at a cost of as much as $200 per
plant. Day lily collectors will want to take advantage of the
special plants offered this year for the last time.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of the Monts sale is
that each plant is offered for the bargain price of $5.00. Planting
and growing tips are also offered to those in need of such. Many of
the day lilies are not available at any other nursery in the Lincoln
area.

Day lilies come in a variety of colors and have
unique and playful names such as Purple Many Faces, Parade of
Peacocks, Piaffe, and Chicks Dig It. These are among the varieties
offered for purchase at the 2019 sale, along with hostas, widow’s
tears, and evening primrose, perennials also grown in the Monts’
gardens.
If you are looking for a colorful and unique Mother's Day gift, or
perhaps some special additions to your home garden, you will not
want to miss this sale.
Every penny raised at the Monts’ Plant Sale is destined to provide
food, both physical and spiritual, to those who lack nourishment and
