[April 30, 2019]    Jennifer Kupcho could have walked into the field for the U.S. Women's Open had she remained an amateur.

Instead, she will charge into the event as a professional after making it through qualifying on Monday.

Another new professional, Maria Fassi, also played her way into the field for the U.S. Women's Open, scheduled for May 30-June 2 at the Country Club of Charleston (S.C.).

Kupcho, a 22-year-old senior at Wake Forest University, previously earned two U.S. Women's exemptions: one for capturing the Mark H. McCormack Medal, given to the highest-rated amateur player, and another for winning the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur on April 6.

However, in order to play the U.S. Women's Open as a pro, she had to get through a qualifying event, which she did by topping the field Monday at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Her 3-under-par 69 in the second round left her at 3-under 141.

Gina Kim, an 18-year-old Duke University freshman, won a playoff with Clemson assistant coach Heather Young for another U.S. Women's Open slot out of Greensboro.

Fassi, who finished second to Kupcho in the Augusta National Women's Amateur, cruised to a five-shot win Monday in the qualifying event at the Country Club of Ocala (Fla.). Fassi, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Arkansas, shot 66-74 to finish at 5-under-par 139.

The second qualifying spot from Ocala went to University of Florida junior Sierra Brooks, who prevailed in a playoff.
