Edwin Diaz navigated Leury Garcia's solo home
run with two out in the ninth, striking out three of the four
batters he faced to earn his 24th save.
Chicago caught a bad break in the eighth against Justin Wilson,
who replaced Mets starter Jacob deGrom to begin the inning.
With runners on first and second and two out, Jon Jay grounded a
would-be, go-ahead single up the middle, but the ball ricocheted
off second-base umpire Stu Scheurwater. Jay was awarded first
base but the baserunners were limited to advancing one base, so
Ryan Goins had to return to third base.
Wilson (2-1) then got Tim Anderson to bounce out to shortstop to
end the threat.
The Mets wasted little time rallying against Colome (3-2),
seizing control of what had been a pitcher's duel between
right-handers deGrom and Lucas Giolito of the White Sox.
Giolito allowed the leadoff man aboard in four of his seven
innings, including a walk to Conforto to open the sixth.
Conforto advanced to third base on Robinson Cano's one-out
single, and scored when he beat Goins' throw home on Wilson
Ramos' grounder to third base.
Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the third on Jose Abreu's one-out
sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. AJ Reed followed with a
walk to re-load the bases, but deGrom struck out Eloy Jimenez to
end the threat.
The White Sox had runners at first and second with one out in
the seventh, but deGrom fanned Yolmer Sanchez and Garcia to
escape damage.
Vying for his first victory since June 30, Giolito took a
no-decision after pitching seven innings. He allowed one run on
three hits and three walks, and struck out nine. Wednesday
marked the first time he worked at least seven innings since
June 8, a span of eight starts.
The Mets got an equally sharp performance from deGrom, who
scattered one run and five hits in seven innings with two walks
and 11 strikeouts.
Frazier had two hits for the Mets, while Goins, Jay and Garcia
had two hits apiece for the White Sox.
