Atlanta Library Plans Restoration
Project

One of the important responsibilities of the Atlanta Library Board
of Directors is preservation of the community’s historic Library
building for future generations.
The Atlanta Public Library was built in 1908 and – thanks to the
quality of its initial construction – has generally stood the test
of time well. After 111 years, however, a much-needed restoration
project will replace the current internal guttering system. Work
includes replacing rotted framing, installing new gutter sheeting
and copper gutters, new downspouts, as well as repainting existing
wood soffits and dentil moldings. Because the Library building is
both a National Historic Register property and a locally designated
Atlanta Landmark, all work will be done according to landmark
requirements.
The objectives of the preservation project are to protect the
Atlanta Library Building from water and other weather damage, ensure
the facility is attractive and welcoming to the public, and
guarantee its long-term viability.
The Atlanta Public Library District is a service-driven community
resource for learning, creativity, and engagement. Its mission is to
improve the quality of life of residents and visitors by expanding
their horizons, meeting their learning needs, and enhancing their
interests in meaningful and entertaining ways. In addition to the
basic library services provided, the District offers over 50
programs (mostly free) to adults and children that attract nearly
600 people annually.

In 2018, the District was selected as one of seven organizations in the state to
host an Illinois Turns 200 live podcast and was also chosen by the Smithsonian
Institution as one of six sites in Illinois to host its new traveling
exhibition, Crossroads: Change in Rural America. Because the community attracts
many national and international visitors each year, the Library recently joined
efforts with the Logan County Tourism Bureau and the communities of Elkhart and
Mt. Pulaski, to create a network of Visitor Welcome Centers in each city to
promote tourism throughout the County.
