Cardinals tee off on Castillo, Reds

[August 17, 2019]    Dexter Fowler homered to highlight his three-hit, four-RBI performance and Paul Goldschmidt, Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong also went deep as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals cruised to a 13-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.

Wong collected four hits and scored three runs, and Goldschmidt added an RBI single for the Cardinals, who totaled 18 hits en route to their sixth victory in seven contests.

Cincinnati rookie Aristides Aquino launched a two-run shot in the sixth inning to set a major league record with his 10th homer in his first 15 career games. The 25-year-old's blast off Adam Wainwright (9-8) broke the mark set by Philadelphia's Rhys Hoskins, who had 10 homers in the first 17 contests in 2017.

The Reds saw third baseman Eugenio Suarez exit in the sixth inning with a left thumb sprain. X-rays were negative for Suarez, who leads the team in homers (33) and RBIs (76).

Wainwright allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to improve to 4-1 in his last seven starts.

St. Louis matched its one-run, two-hit total in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Reds in the first inning alone, as Tommy Edman singled and scored on Marcell Ozuna's two-out double to left field.

The Cardinals also did damage with two outs in the second inning, as Wong and Wainwright each singled before Fowler deposited a 3-0 fastball from Luis Castillo (11-5) over the wall in right-center field. The homer was Fowler's 14th of the season and second in five games.

St. Louis wasn't done flexing its muscles, as DeJong sent an 0-1 slider from Castillo over the wall in center field to take a 6-0 lead in the third inning before Goldschmidt muscled a fastball to right-center for a two-run shot in the fifth.

That effectively spelled the end of a disastrous night for Castillo, who permitted a career-high eight runs. He also matched a career high in both hits (nine) and homers (three) in 4 1/3 innings.

Goldschmidt capped a four-run sixth inning with an RBI single before Cincinnati dented the scoreboard, with Aquino's homer to left field highlighting a three-run frame.
