Hiura paces Brewers' offense in win over Cardinals

[August 29, 2019]    Rookie Keston Hiura drove in three runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday afternoon.

Hiura delivered an RBI groundout, a solo home run and a run-scoring double as the Brewers snapped the Cardinals' six-game winning streak and avoided getting swept in the three-game series.

The third-place Brewers moved back to within 5 1/2 games of the National League Central-leading Cardinals, who fell for just the fourth time in their last 19 games.

Brewers pitcher Jordan Lyles (9-8) allowed just one run while striking out nine batters in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up six hits and walked one..

Lyles is 4-1 in with a 2.51 ERA six starts since arriving in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Prior to that deal, Lyles was 5-7 with a 5.36 ERA in 17 starts for the Pirates.

Reliever Junior Guerra got Lyles out of a sixth-inning jam and closer Josh Hader earned his 26th save with two scoreless innings. Hader had blown four of his last five save opportunities.

Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty (8-7) was left with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The Brewers turned second baseman Kolten Wong's first-inning error into a quick 1-0 lead. That miscue put runners at second and third and Hiura's grounder drove home a run.

Ryan Braun doubled in the second inning and eventually scored on Orlando Arcia's sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Hiura's solo homer in the fourth inning pushed the lead to 3-0. Wong's solo homer in the sixth inning cut that margin to 3-1. Wong was starting for the first time since he fouled a ball off his foot Saturday.

Hiura's RBI double in the eighth inning made it 4-1.

Brewers third baseman Mike Moustakas remained sidelined with a bruised wrist. The Cardinals cleared a spot on their 40-man roster by releasing injury-plagued utility man Drew Robinson, who spent most of the season at Triple-A Memphis.
