Jake Cave hit two home runs, and
C.J. Cron homered, doubled and drove in three runs as the visiting
Minnesota Twins jumped out to a 9-0 lead and then cruised to a 10-5
victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday afternoon.
Cave's home run leading off the third inning was the 139th of the
season hit on the road by the Twins, breaking the major league
single-season record set by the San Francisco Giants in 2001.
Nelson Cruz had two hits and three RBIs, Jonathan Schoop had three
hits and a run scored, and Jorge Polanco and Eddie Rosario each had
two hits for Minnesota, which completed a three-game series sweep of
the White Sox with its fifth straight victory.
Jose Abreu went 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, and Eloy
Jimenez and Yolmer Sanchez each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run
scored for Chicago.
Cubs 4, Mets 1
Victor Caratini homered twice off reigning National League Cy Young
Award winner Jacob deGrom to account for all of his team's runs as
Chicago completed a three-game sweep of host New York.
The Mets, who lost the final six games of a nine-game homestand that
began with a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Indians, fell five
games behind the Cubs.
Caratini, who is usually the Cubs' backup catcher, made just his
third start of the season at first base as manager Joe Maddon looked
to load the lineup with contact hitters against deGrom.
Indians 2, Tigers 0
Mike Clevinger tossed eight overpowering innings, Francisco Lindor
homered and drove in both runs, and Cleveland continued its
domination of host Detroit.
Clevinger (10-2) is 9-0 in his last 11 starts. He allowed just four
hits, walked none and struck out 10 against Detroit. Brad Hand
recorded his 33rd save and second in as many games as the Indians
swept the three-game series.
Detroit, which has the majors' worst record, has lost five straight.
The Indians have won 14 straight and 15 of 16 against the Tigers
this season.
Marlins 4, Reds 3 (12 innings)
Rookie Harold Ramirez led off the 12th inning with a walk-off homer,
and Miami defeated Cincinnati.
Ramirez hit a 1-1 pitch from closer Raisel Iglesias (2-10). It was
Ramirez's eighth homer of the season and his second walk-off dinger.
The Marlins scored all of their runs on solo homers, as Jon Berti,
Austin Dean and Starlin Castro also went deep.
Diamondbacks 11, Dodgers 5
Arizona chased starter Hyun-Jin Ryu in the fifth inning and sent him
to his third consecutive loss in a victory over Los Angeles in
Phoenix.
Eduardo Escobar hit his 30th home run for the Diamondbacks, a
three-run shot off Joe Kelly in the sixth inning for a 10-4 lead. He
became the fourth switch hitter in major league history with 30
homers, 20 doubles and 10 triples in the same season, joining Ripper
Collins (1934), Mickey Mantle (1955) and Jimmy Rollins (2007).
Ryu (12-5) gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings and has
allowed 18 runs in his past three starts, inflating his ERA from
1.45 to 2.35. The left-hander had been 3-0 in three previous starts
this season against Arizona, giving up one run in 20 innings.
Athletics 9, Royals 8
Jurickson Profar homered and finished with three hits and three
RBIs, and Seth Brown added four hits as Oakland defeated host Kansas
City to take three out of four in the series.

Yusmeiro Petit (4-3) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn
the win. Liam Hendriks recorded the final five outs -- all
strikeouts -- to pick up his 17th save despite allowing a
ninth-inning run.
Neither starter lasted five innings. Kansas City's Glenn Sparkman
(3-10) gave up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Mariners 5, Rangers 3
Austin Nola's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning brought home the
go-ahead run as Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak with a
win in Arlington, Texas.
Mariners right-hander Matt Magill (4-1) pitched the final two
innings for the victory.
Seattle's Felix Hernandez, making his second start since being
activated from the 60-day injured list because of right shoulder
issues, went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits, with
one walk and three strikeouts.
Rays 9, Astros 8
Ji-Man Choi's tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning led
Tampa Bay to a win over host Houston.
Choi's key hit came off Astros reliever Chris Devenski (2-3) in the
Rays' three-run seventh that took them from a 6-5 deficit to a
two-run lead. Travis d'Arnaud had three hits and four RBIs for the
Rays, who avoided a three-game series sweep.
D'Arnaud hit his 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left
field in the fourth inning that gave the Rays a 4-2 lead. Austin
Meadows also homered for the Rays, who stayed a game behind the
Oakland Athletics for the second American League wild card.
Pirates 11, Rockies 8
Rookie shortstop Kevin Newman had two solo homers among four hits
and drove in a career-high four runs as Pittsburgh beat Colorado in
Denver.
Adam Frazier also had four hits, scored a run and drove in two for
the Pirates, who built an 11-3 lead before holding off a late charge
by the Rockies.
Colin Moran and Jose Osuna each contributed two hits, two runs and
two RBIs for Pittsburgh, which has won five of seven following a 1-5
stretch.
Padres 5, Giants 3
Manuel Margot and Austin Hedges hit home runs, helping rookie
right-hander Chris Paddack win for the first time in five starts as
San Diego beat host San Francisco in the opener of a four-game
series.
Reliever Matt Strahm worked into and out of a bases-loaded, no-out
jam in the eighth inning, allowing just one run, as the fourth-place
Padres moved within three games of the third-place Giants in the
National League West.
In the opener of a seven-game trip, the Padres took the lead for
good with a three-run third inning, with the first two runs scoring
on Margot's 11th homer of the season. Eric Hosmer added an RBI
double later in the inning.
