Lincoln College senior outside hitter Hannah Cameron recorded a season-high total of 18 kills and led the LC defense in digs with 15 to help her team complete a three-set sweep at Hannibal-LaGrange University on Thursday evening. Cameron and the Lady Lynx took the match 25-22, 25-18, 25-18.

The victory improved Lincoln’s record to 3-2 on the season, but the win proved to be another costly one as, for the second match in a row, a senior starter left the game with a knee injury. On Tuesday, right side hitter Mattie Giese (Highland Park) hurt her knee after landing awkwardly during a hitting attempt. Giese’s playing status is still uncertain. This time it was senior setter Emma Derry (Augusta) who left the match against HLGU early in the third set after slipping on a slick spot on the floor injuring her right knee.

“We have just had a terrible run of bad luck with regard to players getting hurt,” said Lincoln College Head Coach Mark Tippett. “So far we have been able to make adjustments and stay competitive, but we could really use a stretch of time without any injuries in order to put a consistent lineup on the floor.”

Derry is the sixth player on the varsity roster to miss playing time this season due to injury.

When Derry left the match, Lincoln was up two sets to none, but was trailing 6-1 after a rough start in the third set. However, the Lady Lynx managed to rally back and tie the score at 12-12. From there the two teams battled back and forth up to a 15-14 Lincoln lead. The next volley ended on a back row attack kill by senior Kaylyn Hoffert (Lincoln) which sparked a seven-point run by the Lady Lynx.

The offensive outburst put Lincoln in command up 22-15 and featured three kills by Hannah Cameron and two from right side hitter Mikalyla Seibert (Mackinaw). Sophomore setter Morgan Lolling (Lincoln) was credited with six of her team-high 24 set assists during the scoring run that put her team in position to end the match.

Coach Tippett was impressed by the way his players handled yet another lineup change due to injury. “I am very proud of the way our team has responded to adversity this year and that was true again in this match. We could have crumbled after losing Emma last night, but instead our players regrouped, stayed calm and fought their way to a win,” said Tippett.

Lincoln will get a much needed break this weekend and will play next at home on Wednesday, September 4th at 6:00 PM against Blackburn College.
