Guard Tomas Woldetensae scored a season-high 11
points and Francisco Caffaro had a season-best 10 points for
Virginia, which was facing a nationally ranked team for the
first time this season.
Virginia (8-1, 2-0 ACC) reached the 50-point mark for the first
time in a four-game stretch (reaching that level with 4:40
remaining). The Cavaliers are one of four teams without an ACC
loss this season.
Cole Anthony's 12 points and Armando Bacot's 11 points paced the
Tar Heels (6-3, 1-1), who had a second-half stretch of about
eight minutes without a field goal.
No. 9 Gonzaga 83, No. 22 Washington 76
Filip Petrusev had team-high totals of 17 points and 10 rebounds
as the ninth-ranked Bulldogs held off the 22nd-ranked Huskies in
a nonconference game in Seattle.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Bulldogs
(10-1), who beat the Huskies (7-2) for the sixth straight time
and the 13th time in the past 14 meetings. Washington holds a
29-19 lead in the all-time series, which dates to 1910.
Ryan Woolridge tallied 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, Corey
Kispert and Killian Tillie each scored 15, and Joel Ayayi had 12
points, including a clinching 3-pointer with 25 seconds
remaining. Tillie had six assists and five rebounds, and Ayayi
had four assists.
No. 11 Michigan State 77, Rutgers 65
Cassius Winston scored 23 points to lead the Spartans to victory
over the Scarlet Knights in East Lansing, Mich.
Winston also had seven assists as Michigan State (6-3, 1-0 Big
Ten) bounced back from a loss to Duke last week to open Big Ten
play with a victory. Sophomore Gabe Brown scored a season-high
14 for the Spartans, while junior Xavier Tillman added 14 points
and 10 rebounds and sophomore Aaron Henry chipped in 12 points.
Graduate transfer Akwasi Yeboah scored 17 to lead Rutgers, which
remained winless against Michigan State in 10 all-time meetings.
Junior guard Jacob Young added 12 points for the Scarlet Knights
(6-3, 0-1).
Iowa State 76, No. 16 Seton Hall 66
Tyrese Haliburton had 17 points, six rebounds and five assists,
and George Conditt IV had a career-high 17 points and tied a
career high with five blocked shots as the Cyclones upset the
Pirates.
Rasir Bolton added 17 points and eight rebounds, and Iowa State
used a late 14-3 run to take control, avenging an eight-point
loss to Seton Hall in the fifth-place game of the Battle 4
Atlantis in Nassau, the Bahamas, on Nov. 29.
All-American candidate Myles Powell had 19 points and four
3-pointers before fouling out with 54 seconds remaining for
Seton Hall. The Pirates were unable to overcome the loss of
second-leading scorer Sandro Mamukelashvili, who broke his wrist
on a hard fall less than five minutes into the game.
No. 17 Florida State 72, Clemson 53
Devin Vassell paced the Seminoles with 14 points and nine
rebounds as Florida State bounced back from a loss by beating
the visiting Tigers in an ACC game in Tallahassee, Fla.
Florida State (8-2, 1-1 ACC) trailed 33-27 at halftime but
started the second half on a 10-0 run to grab control. The
Seminoles extended the run to 25-8 by the midpoint of the half,
stretching the lead to 52-41 on a 3-pointer by Trent Forrest.
The Seminoles, who lost 80-64 at Indiana on Tuesday as part of
the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, outscored Clemson 45-20 in the second
half. Florida State's Anthony Polite scored 12 points, and
fellow guard M.J. Walker added 11 points. Clemson (5-4, 0-2)
committed 18 turnovers and lost its third consecutive game.
No. 19 Dayton 78, Saint Mary's 68
Jalen Crutcher scored 21 points and Obi Toppin added 16 to lead
the Flyers to a win over the Gaels in the Air Force Reserve
Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix.
Crutcher scored 19 first-half points on 6-of-7 shooting from the
field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. He cooled off in the
second half and finished 7-for-13 from the field but also
recorded six assists.
Trey Landers was clutch down the stretch for the Flyers (7-1)
and finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
