Free Event at Memorial Medical Center to Teach Public How to Handle Life-Threatening Bleeds

[December 09, 2019]  Featuring simulations in the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation, a free community event will teach the public how to handle life-threatening bleeding incidents.

The interactive program, “Stop the Bleed,” will be offered in two sessions. The first will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12; the second from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

Seating is limited to 60 participants each session. Participants can register for either session.

"An injury can cause a person to bleed to death in less than five minutes," said Lindsey Petersen, a quality review registered nurse in emergency medical services at Memorial Medical Center. “Life-threatening bleeds can happen at home, at work or in the community from either a natural or intentional wound. This course will help the public learn how to act immediately to save themselves or someone else."

Participants can be any age and should dress for active participation. Each participant will receive a free emergency kit with tourniquet, thanks to a grant from the Memorial Medical Center Foundation.

The Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI) is at 228 W. Miller St., at the southeast corner of Rutledge and Miller streets. Free parking is available in the parking garage south of the MCLI at Rutledge and Carpenter streets.

The Memorial Medical Center Emergency Department and the Southern Illinois Trauma Center, based at Memorial Medical, are the event's sponsors.
