The reigning 7th Grade Class 1A State Basketball Champs did
it again Thursday night in Assumption. This time the Lady Wolverines
of West Lincoln Broadwell defeated Ashland A-C Central 25-20 to cap
off a 29-1 season and bring home the top hardware in the state.
The Lady Wolverines were quick to jump out to an 8-1 lead in the
first quarter and by halftime they maintained a 14-7 advantage over
the Knights.
A solid performance in the third quarter gave WLB a 22-9 lead.
The Knights did not give up in the fourth quarter and with 19.6
seconds left in the game Delaney Jokisch banked in a three for A-C
Central and that made the score 25-20. The Knights were able to get
off another shot at the end of the game but it was the Lady
Wolverines who were announced as state champions with a 25-20 win.
Mia Clark led WLB with 13 points.
Carson Arthalony led A-C Central with 13 points.
Following the win, WLB Coach Kari Froebe highlighted what made this
team special. “This team has a bunch of role players,” said Froebe.
“All these girls can score between 10-12 points. They all know their
roles. They work for each other. It’s a group of girls fifteen deep
who all know what they are supposed to do. We don’t have just one
girl who averages 20-25 points, we have a whole group who can score
between 10-12 points and that makes it even more special.”
Did Froebe see this moment unfolding at the beginning of the season?
“We knew we could contend,” she said. ‘We thought we could make it
to the state finals. That was their goal when they set out this
year. We knew we had a chance. I always told them it came down to
their heart and their head. That’s what it comes down to in the post
season. They had to play smart and they had to play with their heart
and they did tonight. I am super-proud of them. We did what we had
to do to win and hold on to it. None of these girls had really had
the state championship on their shoulders before with the class
above them. Usually they would come into a game with a ten or
fifteen point lead and so they’ve never really had that pressure on
them. So this is the first year this group has had to have that
pressure on them and it lied on their shoulders so we kept telling
them over and over again, “Ladies, it’s going to come down to your
heart and your head.” I thought with the circumstances this week
they pulled together and did a fantastic job on the big stage.”
