NHL roundup: Malkin notches 400th career goal in Pens' win

[December 18, 2019]  Two second-period goals and the 400th tally of Evgeni Malkin's career lifted the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins past the Calgary Flames 4-1 on Tuesday.

Malkin, Kris Letang, Bryan Rust and John Marino each had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh, which won its third straight and improved to 13-3-1 against the Western Conference. Johnny Gaudreau scored for Calgary, which lost its second in a row following a seven-game winning streak. Cam Talbot stopped 29 Penguins shots.

Malkin became the eighth active player and fourth player in Penguins history to reach 400 goals, joining Pittsburgh greats Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby and Jaromir Jagr.

Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry made 33 saves. He has won five of his past six starts, allowing a total of eight goals.

Predators 8, Islanders 3

Nick Bonino's go-ahead goal late in the second period was the third in a string of seven unanswered tallies by Nashville, which stormed back to for the win in Uniondale, N.Y.

The Predators trailed 3-1 before scoring the final four goals of the second period and all three goals in the third. Craig Smith scored twice for Nashville, while Filip Forsberg started the flurry in the second period, and Rocco Grimaldi scored the final goal of the second, before Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi and Ryan Johansen scored in the third.



Brock Nelson, Derick Brassard and Casey Cizikas scored in unanswered fashion for New York in a span of just over five minutes early in the second period. Goalie Thomas Greiss took the loss after allowing five goals on 15 shots. Semyon Varlamov finished up and made six saves on nine shots in the third.

Kings 4, Bruins 3 (OT)

Anze Kopitar scored the game-winner 3:23 into overtime as Los Angeles stunned host Boston.

Matt Roy tied the game late, and Blake Lizotte and Adrian Kempe also scored for the Kings, who won for the fourth time in their past five games (4-0-1). Jonathan Quick made 37 saves.

Danton Heinen had a goal and an assist, and Patrice Bergeron and Brandon Carlo also tallied as the Bruins lost for the sixth time in their past seven (1-4-2). Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots.

Lightning 4, Senators 3 (OT)

Anthony Cirelli scored on a breakaway with 19 seconds remaining in overtime to lead Tampa Bay to a win over visiting Ottawa.

With the five-minute session winding down, the speedy Cirelli stole the puck from Ottawa's Thomas Chabot in the defensive end, raced past Nick Paul and shoveled in his seventh tally for the Lightning, who improved to 3-3 in overtime.

Brayden Point notched a goal and an assist, and Nikita Kucherov and Cedric Paquette netted goals for Tampa Bay, which started a stretch of four games in seven days. Ottawa's Anthony Duclair notched his club-best 19th goal, and Mark Borowiecki and Connor Brown also scored. Chris Tierney contributed two assists in his 400th career game.

Canadiens 3, Canucks 1

Tomas Tatar scored a goal for the fourth straight game, and he and Shea Weber notched power-play goals in the opening 3:25 of the third period as Montreal broke a tie and defeated host Vancouver.

Nick Cousins also scored, and Max Domi and Joel Armia each had two assists for the Canadiens, who opened a seven-game trip by improving to 8-4-3 on the road.

Montreal goaltender Carey Price made 38 saves to post his 335th career victory, passing Cam Ward for 23rd place on the NHL's all-time wins list. Adam Gaudette scored for the Canucks, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Jacob Markstrom stopped 27 of 30 shots.

Hurricanes 6, Jets 3

Sebastian Aho collected two goals and an assist, and Andrei Svechnikov scored a lacrosse-style goal as Carolina breezed to a victory at Winnipeg.

Captain Jordan Staal scored twice, Lucas Wallmark added a power-play tally and Petr Mrazek finished with 30 saves for the Hurricanes, who improved to 5-0-1 in their past six games. Dougie Hamilton contributed three assists, and Nino Niederreiter had two helpers.

Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele scored his team-leading 16th goal to extend his point streak to seven games, and Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic also tallied.

Maple Leafs 5, Sabres 3

Auston Matthews scored two goals, and Toronto held on to defeat visiting Buffalo. Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for the Maple Leafs, who are 8-4-0 under new coach Sheldon Keefe.

Frederik Gauthier added a goal and an assist, Dmytro Timashov scored a goal, and Ilya Mikheyev had a short-handed empty-net goal for Toronto. Tyson Barrie added two assists.

Jack Eichel and Rasmus Dahlin each had a goal and an assist for Buffalo, and Kyle Okposo scored a goal. Victor Olofsson had two assists. Eichel extended his points streak to 17 games, during which he has 16 goals and 15 assists. Linus Ullmark made 28 saves for Buffalo.

Flyers 4, Ducks 1

Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier each had a goal and an assist while David Kase and Jake Voracek added one goal apiece to lift host Philadelphia past Anaheim.

Goaltender Carter Hart stopped a season-high 40 shots as Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak. The Flyers were outscored 14-5 in those three road losses against the Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets.

Rickard Rakell scored the lone goal for the Ducks. Goaltender John Gibson kept Anaheim close the entire game until a late empty-net goal, making 27 saves.

Blue Jackets 5, Red Wings 3

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, Kevin Stenlund scored his first career goal, and Columbus won at Detroit.

Cam Atkinson, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Gustav Nyquist also scored for the Blue Jackets while Joonas Korpisalo made 18 saves.

Adam Erne scored his first two goals of the season for the Red Wings. Tyler Bertuzzi had the team's other goal, and Jonathan Bernier made 34 saves.
 


Golden Knights 3, Wild 2

Tomas Nosek scored what scored what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the third period, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves to lead Vegas past Minnesota in Las Vegas.

Shea Theodore and Chandler Stephenson also scored goals, and Mark Stone added two assists for Vegas. The Golden Knights improved to 8-2-1 in their past 11 games while winning their third in a row. It was the 453rd career victory for Fleury, moving him within one of Curtis Joseph for sixth place in NHL history.

Mats Zuccarello and Zach Parise scored for the Wild, who lost for the first time in their history in four games played at Las Vegas. Alex Stalock finished with 26 saves.

Coyotes 3, Sharks 2

Taylor Hall's addition to Arizona provided an immediate payoff, as he set up Oliver Ekman-Larsson's late game-winning goal in a road victory over San Jose.

Hall, the former Hart Trophy winner acquired via trade from the New Jersey Devils on Monday, beat Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon to the puck deep in the offensive zone and then fed a pass to Ekman-Larsson to convert with just 2:37 remaining in the game.

Goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 26 saves for the Pacific Division-leading Coyotes, who also got goals from Carl Soderberg and Derek Stepan. Tomas Hertl scored twice, and Aaron Dell stopped 16 shots for the Sharks, who have just one victory in their past eight games (1-6-1).
