The Atlanta Public Library has begun a project to restore the
internal guttering system installed when the structure was
originally built in 1908. Announced earlier this year, the project
includes replacing rotted framing, installing new copper gutter
sheeting, new copper downspouts, and replacing deteriorated soffits
and dentil moldings.
The original guttering system stood the test of time well, lasting
111 years, but finally reached a point where it needed to be
replaced. As a National Historic Register property, and a locally
designated Atlanta Landmark, all work on the Atlanta Public Library
is being done according to landmark requirements.
One of the important responsibilities of the Atlanta Library Board
of Directors is preservation of the community’s historic Library
building for future generations.
The objective of this particular preservation project are to protect
the Atlanta Library Building from water and other weather damage,
ensure the facility is attractive and welcoming to the public, and
guarantee its long-term viability.
The Atlanta Public Library District is a service-driven community
resource for learning, creativity, and engagement. Its mission is to
improve the quality of life of residents and visitors by expanding
their horizons, meeting their learning needs, and enhancing their
interests in meaningful and entertaining ways.

In addition to the basic library services provided, the District
offers over 50 programs (mostly free) to adults and children that
attract nearly 600 people annually.
In 2018, the District was selected as one of seven organizations in
the state to host an Illinois Turns 200 live podcast and was also
chosen by the Smithsonian Institution as one of six sites in
Illinois to host its new traveling exhibition, Crossroads: Change in
Rural America.
Because the community attracts many national and international
visitors each year, the Library recently joined efforts with the
Logan County Tourism Bureau and the communities of Elkhart and Mt.
Pulaski, to create a network of Visitor Welcome Centers in each city
to promote tourism throughout the County.
